Hey all! Heading to Chicago next week with my SO''s sister to hopefully pick out a ring. We''ve been dating for 5 years and I really want to make this ring special. Some things about her ring desires:

- Classy (not gauty)
- Can not be set very high because she is in the medical profession
- Always had mentioned Tiffany''s but more recently hinting at just happy to finally get a ring!

I guess I was always thinking Tiffany''s too but after exploring their pricing and dealing with their extremely poor customer service, I am starting to think that going with a custom ring may be a better idea. I think it would also add something to it if I helped design it.

Here are the pricing parameters that I received from Tiffany''s.

The Lucida setting has a staring carat weight of .23

Based upon your inquiry, below are some quotations of the Lucida
engagement ring with a platinum setting that are available:

.30 carat, color H, clarity VS1, $2,550.00.
.50 carat, color H, clarity VVS1, $6,250.00.
.75 carat, color H, clarity VVS2, $8,500.00.
1.00 carat, color H, clarity VVS1, $14,700.00.

The Rectangular Lucida has a starting carat weight of .50
Pricing will be very similar per carat weight as the traditional Lucida.
Based upon current inventory, please view the following options:

.51 carat, color I, clarity VVS1, $5,600.00.
.71 carat, color H, clarity VVS1, $8,400.00.
1.07 carat, color H, clarity VVS1, $15,700.00.

I really like the Lucida cut for its simplicity. I''ve looked at both the Asscher and Radiant cuts also online and think they would set well and similar to the Lucida, but don''t seem to match the cut. I am trying to shoot for the $12,000 range which I think should be more than enough to get a nice engagement ring for a college student :-)

I will be heading to Chicago and will setup an appointment with Tiffany''s next week. I have also been working with Ethan Lord.

What I''m wondering:

-Any experience with Ethan Lord
-Are the pricing parameters for this Lucida as far out of whack as I think?
-Has anyone had good experiences creating a custom ring with similar style to the Lucida? If so any suggestions?

Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

Thank you all in advance!

You will certainly overpay at Tiffany''s...I would personally avoid it unless it''s important to your girl.

There are settings by Vatche that are basically the same as the lucida setting.

The lucida stone is a proprietary cut, so you won''t find anything exactly like it but there are MANY options.

One really nice option is the X-Factor by Whiteflash...

Here is an example of what an x-factor looks like:

Finally, my ring is a cushion (rectangular) with a bezel ring somewhat inspired by the lucida bezel. I LOVE it and get tons of compliments on it, so that is another route to go too. Mark at Engagement Rings Direct in NY made my ring.

Thanks for your input! You have a beautiful ring and I can definitely see the Lucida inspiration.

I agree that you can get more stone for your money elsewhere, unless you are in love with some particular setting or cut that they have. Another option, if she just wants something from Tiffany''s, would be to get the wedding band there. They have some really pretty, delicate ones. The Chicago store is nice -- good luck with your search!

I have a lucida so I''m biased but we searched high and low and couldn''t find anything that we loved as much as the lucida. The prices are higher but to us it was worth it. Keep an eye on signedpieces as they sell second hand tiffany jewellery and they often have lucidas on their site.

I would highly recommend taking a look at the Vatche X-Prong settings. They are the closest thing to the Lucida setting- some people have claimed that Vatche actually produces the Lucida for Tiffany & Co. but I''m not sure. You can get much more for your money and customize the look more than you could if you bought from Tiffany.

I bought my X-prong from Goldin Jewelers in Chicago, which is only about a half block away from Tiffany & Co. They were great to work with and they had quite a few samples to show us. I would definitely recommend giving them a call and taking a look at Vatche if you will be in that part of town anyways.

There are a few pictures of our new X-Prong in this thread:

Good luck!!
