I am thinking of buying this diamond today and would greatly appreciate any feedback that you can give me. The details are as follows:

Carats: 1.54
Cut: Emerald
Color: D
Clarity: VS1
Symmetry: Excellent
Polish: Excellent
Girdle: Thick
Cutlet: None
Floor: None
Depth: 66.4
Table: 63
Dimensions: 7.20 x 5.99 x 3.98

The jeweler is asking $14,045 for this diamond and I am wondering if this is a good price. I asked him what the diamond cut grade is but he keep saying everything is excellent. I am afraid that he is referring to the finish. Can you help me with the cut grade from the info I provided. Thanks is advance. I need to make my decision today.

Rob

There are no cut grades for emerald cut diamonds.

You could evaluate cut, but there are no official grades. To rate brilliance - taking this as part of cut quality - would take allot more detail, or seeing the diamond.

Otherwise, I can''t find anything *bad* in the data given, but that doesn''t quite put the diamond in my hand: I could not compare the looks of it with other diamonds I know or draw it based on those numbers.

Btw. You may want to trace down the story of other EC buys on this forum by the avatar name of the owners. For another large and fine D color EC, try ''Windowshopper'' and her story. The stone she ended up with is quite something.

From what is listed.

A 10k stone 'sounds' at least as good.

You can look it up on the database above for ref:

1.59cts
GIA: D/VS1
depth:67.5%
table:63%
girdle: med-sl.thk
culet: no
finish: vg/vg
fluorescence: no
size: 8.83*5.32*3.59
cost: $10293

These diamonds are - in general - available to be 'called in' by multiple sellers. Including local jewelers that are not present on this forum.

Of course, if the data available about your diamond didn't tell me about brilliance, neither do these numbers.

They just say that 1.5cts with very close parameters and and if anything a bit larger looking (size given by diameters) may be less expensive. But this (price) is common difference between online and local sales. A matter of overhead... or something. Sometimes the same stones are priced at comparable differences. Perhaps either is a 'good price' for what and where from the quotes are. I don't know how to judge this.

Hope this helps.

The jeweler keeps making a big deal about the symmetry and polish both being excellent. Does that really make a big difference in the appearance of the ring? How does it impact price? Thanks.

... definitely not for me: maybe there is some rare feakish exception with the lower end of the 'good' symmetry grade - for anything else I would need a good loupe and lots of patience. Relative to 'Very good' - the difference is difficult to grade - seeing it without magnification, well I don't know anyone who says they can guess it. Given that the diamonds that get finish grades above 'good' are a minority, there may be something esotheric about these against the more common 'good' finish.

Perhaps there are some rerefied considerations that get sometimes confused with the quality of finish (graining may affect the transparency instead of polish faults etc.). And there are lots of myths around.

Hope one of the experts (jewelers and appraisers) would chime in. The question has been asked before - you may want to run a search on the forum for the previous answers.

How does it impact price?

As the sellers wishes

Proceed carefully, that is a lot of money to spend and many diamonds out there. I can't advise you on this diamond as I don't know much about EC's, but hopefully if you are not in a rush take your time and see what else is out there. However if you have seen and love this diamond that's fine, but you want to be as well informed as you can, it's a big purchase and you want to get the best you can for the money. Who certified it, and does it have a cert?

Yes the diamond is GIA certified.

Rob, just so you can see what else is out there look Here

Thanks for your help but unfortunately the link your provided doesn''t work.

Well I just went back to the jeweler to look at the diamond again and it is gorgeous so I made the purchase. I feel like I may have paid a little more than what I was seeing on the internet, but I am very happy with my decision. The depth/table ratios seem more ideal that what I was seeing online. This whole ring shopping pricing starts to become overwhelming so it feels good to be done with it. Now I just hope the girl friend like the ring as much as I do. I will have to post some pictures when I pick it up on Thursday. Thanks for everyone''s help.

Congratulations Bammer. If you are happy with your purchase, that''s all that counts, and we are happy too.

Can''t wait to see the pics. An EX/EX emerald cut with D color sounds outstanding!!

Congrats Rob, if that diamond "spoke" to you as it obviously did then great! It is good you were able to see what some other options were and I hope that helped, congrats and I am looking forward to the pics, I love EC''s!!!

I can understand this is the important part after all. If you weren''t considering shopping the net to begin with, it must have looked like a dark pit opening up. And... that''s what the premium for local shopping is about, mostly.

Besides, the stone you were offered must have been nice. Other who come in on the forum like you did but decided to spend some more time and look for options were not as pleased as you were with the service, the price or the merchandise found locally. Meaning... I don''t think you have missed anything.

I picked up the ring today and it is beautiful. I wanted to attach a picture, but the site wasn''t cooperating. I have a quick question about the setting. When I look at the ring closely it appears that the diamond is tilted slightly towards one side. Is this normal or should the diamond sit straight up?

doesn''t sound normal.

why would this ever be normal?

It should never be tilted to one side. Take it back and have them re set it. I hope you can post pics soon. Can''t wait to see it!!!

I was finally able to upload a picture. What do you think?

Here is one more.

You'd think such high grade, valuable stones would get better treatment

After all, it is up to the setting to show off the quality of the diamonds. If it looks no better than CZ rings... what's the use.

Sorry to hear this...

The diamond looks lovely Rob, congratulations

Your emerald looks beautiful, I love the flashes of color--I''m sure your soon-to-be fiance will love it! The setting is very classic, it does look a little crooked though? Hopefully your jeweler can fix that.

Is this a common problem that people have? Should the jeweler be able to fix this easily? It disturbs me that the jeweler would give it to me in this condition. Any suggestions on what I should say to the jeweler? Thanks.

Yes. I''m sorry, Mr. Jeweler, although I love my ring and the setting, there is a slight problem that I have noticed. The diamond appears to me to be set a bit crooked. Please fix this ASAP.

Wouldn''t be the first time bammer...they are so busy this time of year and alas, some just rush it out without giving it a good once over. Yeah, this is an easy one...bring it back and say listen here, fix it!

After looking at this diamond for a very long time I have noticed a small black spot that is visible with the naked eye. I would assume it is a carbon spot. The spot is only visible when you look at the diamond from a certain angle and it is in one of the corners. From what I understand you shouldn''t be able to see any imperfections with the naked eye is a VS1 clarity diamond. Please correct me if I am wrong. Should I be concerned? Keep in mind that this is an emerald cut so maybe imperfections are more noticable. I would appreciate you feedback.

Bammer, it looks like a lovely stone, but--assuming your jeweler has a return policy--I''d take it to an appraiser and make sure it''s what you wantd.
