Thinking of Buying a Used Ring...

Hey everyone. I'm new to the forum and would like some advice.

I found a lady selling a diamond solitaire set in 14K yellow gold. As per the GIA cert., the diamond is 1.5 carat, SI2 in clarity and J color. The cut is round brilliant, but I'm not sure the grade. She's asking $4500.00.

If I purchase this ring, I would set the stone in 14K white gold. We've agreed to meet at a reputable GIA certified jeweler who would do an appraisal while we're there.

My main concern is the color. Is the "J" color in a diamond in this size and shape, set in white gold terribly noticeable? Also, any other suggestions/ advice you could give? Thanks so much!

Jewelers who sell jewels have a conflict of interest when doing "appraisals".

Find a fully-independent professional GIA graduate gemologist appraiser who does not sell anything.
Maybe one on this list is close to you.

Be sure you and the seller split the fee 50/50 (regardless if the sale goes through) so the pro gets no pressure from, or feels no loyalty to, either side.

kenny gave some very good advice.

In regards to color it will depend on how color sensative you are. If you put the "J" next to a "D" you will notice the tint but many people on PS will say "J" even down to "I" is ok if you are allright with it. Has your GF seen a J before? It might be good to take her into a store so she can determine if she is allright before you meet the seller.

Also make sure the certificate says "natural" diamond vs. enhanced. I would also want to know what the inclusions are that make it SI2.

Can you get a copy of the certificate and post it? That would help determind alot more about the diamond.

I think Kenny gave great advice as well. As far as color you will know how you feel when you see it. For me personally, I would be OK with a GIA J color so long as the stone was ideally cut. A well cut J can look better than a poorly cut DEF, so it call comes down to this stones cut for me. Can you list the specs of the stone as Sarahbear suggested?

Hey guys. I took your advice and found an appraiser in my area on this site. The seller agreed to meet me there and the stone checked out. I ended up purchasing it and feel great about the transaction. It's getting set at the jeweler today.
