Think we were told the wrong clarity......

Hi,

Would like to get some opinions please. We bought our engagement ring and didn''t get a certificate with it but a valuation certificate. The valuation cert states that the ring is VS1. Now we have reason to believe that this is untrue as we have spotted an inclusion which we should not be able to see with the naked eye if the stone were actually VS1.

What do people think we should do?

I am not one of the experts but would strongly suggest taking it to an independent appraiser asap. Have you call the store where you bought it and told them what you see? How long ago was the purchase? Do you know the return policy?

It is 10 months since we collected and paid for the ring. I attempted to get the stone appraised this weekend but the two appraisers in my area are on their holidays!

We will be calling to the store where we bought the ring this weekend to see what they say but ideally I would have liked to have had it appraised before doing so.

Contact the store and ask for the cert. Is this ring GIA, EGL , or whatever cert? Also go to the an independent jeweler to get this ring appraised. Good luck.

An independant appraisal would definitely be the way to go, but can you give us more info please - can you see this inclusion from the top of the diamond, or from the side view? Can you describe the inclusion or what you are seeing? Does it by any chance look like a crack running about 2 thirds of the way down the diamond when looking at it from the side?

What are the size and shape of the diamond, does it have a lab grading report, if so which lab - or just the valuation/ cert from the jeweller you bought it from? I have heard of someone seeing an inclusion in a reliably lab graded VS clarity before, so it isn't unheard of, and diamond grading is subjective and down to the skill and experience of the person who grades the diamond. Now, if the diamond wasn't graded by a reliable lab, you can't be sure of the experience and expertise of the person who decreed this diamond is a VS1 clarity. Also various factors can come into play such as the individual eyesight of the viewer, also you probably find it easier to spot the inclusion now with the naked eye, once you have found it, as your eye automatically goes there!

All you can do is to get an appraisal to get a professional opinion, but I don't know if you have any recourse from the store you bought it from though unfortunately. I am not absolutely sure, but I think colour or clarity grades can vary between 2 grades....

Its good that you got the promised clarity grade in writing.If you can see the incluioun with you naked eye then its not as promised...have the stone professionally appraised and then go to the store and ask for a diamond in the grade you were promised in writing.make sure that the second diamond has an apprisal from a well known lab like G.I.A,E.G.L.ect...good luck.

I would also expect the fee you had to invest in the professional appraisal to be either refunded to you by the store or put toward the appraisal for the new stone.If the stone already has appraisal then get the cost back in cash not store credit.

How long did you have your diamond before you noticed the inclusion???

Is it that you were happy with the diamond when you bought it, but now you have found the inclusion, you are less happy with it?

It might not be VS1 clarity, but then you might not have paid a VS1 price.

I bought a ring a long time ago from a company called Shenoa & Co. It was supposed to be VS1 clarity, but when appraised it was more SI2/I1. But having said that, the appraiser said I hadn''t been ripped off. I had probably got what I paid for. And, more importantly, it was a very lovely ring that I enjoyed for quite a few years. So don''t fall out of love with your ring, until you have taken everything into consideration.

I reckon the reason I noticed the inclusion at all was because I was looking at it alot more since the repairs as I was trying to figure out if the new baguette was a good match.

I did not receive a grading certificate with the ring, only the valuation. I have compared the ring to what is available online at Bluenile etc. and the price we paid seems in line with similiar rings.

Cat, if the diamond doesn't have a reliable grading report, then it is very difficult to determine the accuracy of the clarity grading, as there are so many variables. If you are very concerned, then an independant appraisal may be able to tell you more, but if you loved your diamond previously, then please continue to do so, as I am sure it is a gorgeous ring!

if its vs1 and gia/ags graded i really wouldnt worry about it. first id figure out where it was graded....then as recommended take to a gemologist in town and they can tell you for sure.
