I was searching for an I color Si2 (eye clean) stone but am considering this stone (at my local jewelers) which has j color (I'm hoping that j color will still face up fairly white). It has one inclusion on the table, but even knowing exactly where it is, I could not see it with the naked eye. I would love to hear opinions, and if you think it has good proportions (see below), please let me know what you would expect to pay. One advantage of going to a b&m jeweler is that he is willing to take my old diamond (1.71 e si2) in trade even though it was purchased elsewhere. That diamond was purchased in 2002. He is offering 90% of the original cost of that stone toward a trade. Does that sound fair?

GIA Cert 2155967980
3.02 Ct J Si2
Length:9.22
Width:9.27
Depth:5.68
Total Depth:61.44%
Table percent:58
Crown height:14.5
Crown angle:34.5
Pavilion depth:43
Pavilion angle: 40.8
Girdle (from):Medium
Girdle (to):Slightly thick
Polish:Excellent
Symmetry:Excellent
No Fluorescence

It scores 1.5 on HCA and here is the AGA:

Tab Percent: 1A
Crown Angle: 1A
Crown Height: 1A
Pavilion Depth: 1A
Girdle: 1A
Depth: 1A
Polish: 1A
Symmetry: 1A
TotalGrade: 1A

Is there any way to know or to calculate how this stone would score on the AGS system?

Thank you

The numbers are a nice range.

You should put the stone through it's paces in as many lighting situations as you can... outside direct light, outside indirect, indoor indirect. The key is to get the stone out from under the jewelers lights.

Also, make sure you put some hand lotion on before you go into the store, then run your fingers over the stone making it dirty. 90% of the time when the diamond is worn it will be dirty.

See how you like it.

That's really funny! I do wear lotion quite a bit and so yes, it's a good idea to see how it looks when dirty. I did take it outside, but it was overcast. The stone was balanced in a ring setting(not mounted) and it looked quite white and symmetrical in the hazy natural light, but not sparkly. I wonder how it would have looked in the sunlight.
We will be taking the stone to David Atlas on Wednesday. It's not mounted so it might be hard to view its performance in different kinds of light in the short time that we will have it on approval. Perhaps he can walk us outside with the stone in a spring ring or locking tweezers. Any suggestions for what specifically I should ask David for? I really want to know how well the stone performs in different lighting and well the cut returns light. If David says it's a keeper, we'll get an insurance appraisal. I am hoping that David will be able to put the stone through it paces so that I can be assured that I chose wisely.

Thank you, Gypsy, for your thoughtful answer.

David will be a great resource for you. I think it's got a lot of potential. :wink2:
