The right price? Second thoughts...

Hello all you diamond enthusiast out there,

I’ll admit it. I’m an amateur. I have educated myself a little and today I made a purchase. Here are the stats from the Sarin and the GIA cert:

Crown: 34.5
Pavilion: 40.6
Table: 56%
Total Depth: 61.1
Culet: 0.6
Girdle: 3.47-3.5%

1.31 Carat, SI1, G

Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
No Fluorescence

HCA: 0.7-Excellent

I paid $8,600 + CA sales tax. Thought the girdle was a little thick…

Anyway, on the way home I stopped at another place because my fiancé doesn’t know I bought one yet (We’re looking together) and I was shown an 8*. Wow! It looked great and now I’m thinking of returning this one and getting an 8*. The only thing is that the 8* had medium fluorescence which actually looked very good in the store lights. I’m wondering if it’s the fluorescence or the 8* that was so impressive. Anybody out there have any thoughts on this???

Hey Marlowe - I can''t comment on the flourecence .... but it looks like you got a GREAT stone. I wouldn''t second guess your decision

No, it wouldn''t have been the flourescence you were seeing. It would have been the cut. You only see flourescence under a black light. I''d suggest looking at regular ideal cut diamonds next to the 8*. I think there is a significant price premium for an 8*, so you need to be sure it is worth it to you.

What are the specs on the 8*? price in particular? 8*''s are gorgeous but are an appreciable amount more for similar specs.

The one you got sounds great - great angles, girdle is fine! GIA usually only state girdle in words though

oh I just realised it was from the Sarin. What does the cert say for girdle? It still sounds only inthe slightly thick range. I would only worry if it hit the ''thick'' range.

Have you looked online? Here''s one from Whiteflash that is comparable, a bit cheaper, but a little bit smaller. $7487 with PS discount, but it would be true H&A, and gorgeous.

When I bought an ACA a few years ago, I took it to the 8* dealer and we had a side by side diamond showdown. The 8* looked great as well but I was happy with my choice. ACA looked as good if not better and was a lot less expensive. If the 8* jeweler is as confident in his product as he ought to be, he should have no problem with this. That''s the only way you''ll know for sure. Try this while you can still return your stone if you like the 8* better.

I did the same thing. Got a WF New Line ACA that has a similar cut to the 8* (edge-to-edge light return), took it and compared it side-by-side at my B&M with the 8*. Could see no difference. Except the 40% extra for the 8*. Don;t get me wrong, if I had unlimited funds I would LOVE an 8*. But I''d rather get the bigger stone right now
