The quest for a good time Sleeping...

I figured that title would catch more interest than saying I was shopping for a new mattress. (and perhaps some others tendencies for thread labeling on this forum are starting to affect me).

So what kind of mattress does everyone use - and any significant comments on the differences and options.

I am already familiar with Simmons Beauty Rest (individual coils - not connected - so that the mattress conforms to you; and your moving does not disturb your bedmate - and versa-vica). My experience is largely from years ago and the master bed is not so outfitted (I do have a guest bed with a Simmons beauty rest). I also found that use of a memory foam pad was needed in recent years due to improper back support for the mattress in my main bed.

This summer is the time to fix the bed situation (at least the proper support situation to get a good nights sleep).

While Simmons is high on my list to look at; there are lots of other options out there: Waterbeds (I understand that they don't rock like they used to...); air, natural latex, pure foam beds, etc.

I won't say price is no object (as there are $15,000 mattresses on the market) - but I don't need to be a cheapskate either.

A few minutes laying in beds in the stores may rule out the worst ones... but, I'm not sure how that relates to long term...

Looking for some good S in bed... and I figured all you women, and the few guys, could offer all kinds of advice.

I also am in the market for a new bed, so I would be interested in the responses, I currently have a pillow top water bed and its getting really old and I need a new one.

Hubby and I are also shopping for a new mattress. I have fibromyalgia and quality, restorative sleep is absolutely necessary for me to function on a daily basis.

We currently have our eye on a Tempur-Pedic Rhapsody bed. Price is $3299. If we were to add on the wonderful adjustable component it would come to $6499!

Maybe I should go shopping for a new hubby if I really am on the quest for a good time in bed...screw the mattress part...

JUST KIDDING! I'm at a really boring wedding that I can't seem to get my husband to leave from.

We need one too..I'd like to try the Tempu-Pedic personally, tho I hear it makes you hot and that you get "stuck" in it? Dunno, never tried it before, it just looks good in the commercials.

I've read on here a lot of good things about the latex mattresses as well.

There's some mattress that a hotel has made exclusively for them that is supposed to be a magical sleep machine or something too, if I remember correctly. (tho it's available to the public, so I don't know how it can be exclusive to the hotel-so I must not remember correctly)

Flobeds.com. LATEX. I LOVE LOVE LOVE this bed. Customizable for each person. No pressure points. No indentations.

Talk to me when class starts, Uppy. I'll give you the lowdown.

I slept on a spring mattress for over 50 years.

We just got a foam one and I wake up sweaty, even with a generous mattress pad. :(sad

I wish we had gotten another spring mattress.

In 2005/2006 we got a combo latax/spring mattress from our local Denver Mattress (Furniture Row) store. We love it's comfort, but the mattress is starting to warp. When our bed is naked, you can clearly see two indentations where we sleep and there's a dip on DH's side where he tends to sit on the edge when putting on his socks and dressing. We tried rotating it since you don't flip this kind of mattress and the dip on his side made me roll to the very outer edge, which I found to be very uncomfortable. I believe the mattress came with a 10-year manufacturers warranty so it looks like I'm going to be digging through our paperwork to find the info on it and see what can be done, if anything.

That said, my parents have a similar mattress from a local store and they have had no problems at all with theirs. Maybe ours is defective  They bought theirs a few years before we got ours.

Before we purchased our current mattress we did try a Tempur-Pedic in the store but we both found it to be too soft for sleeping - but that is a personal preference.

My mom and her husband got one of the nice airmattress types. Not sure of brand, but one of the nicer ones. Well, they had it for barely 3 months and it sprung a leak so one side couldn't hold any firmness at all.

I've never been willing to let a TempurPedic (or comparable) in the house because FI had tempurPedic pillows when he came to live with me -- they stunk (literally smelled so bad I wouldn't go near his side of the bed). We tossed them and bought him new ones -- they smelled too.

a 100% latex mattress is what we've been on for 10 years now and i'll never own anything but 100% real latex again.

Thanks for all the comments:

Here is what I decided on:

Laytex does not hold heat like memory foam.

Memory foam conforms oh so nice to your body.

The Simmons Beautyrest independent coil springs also conform so nice to your body - without affecting your sleeping partner as you roll around (and if you haven't ever tried one - you should).

So I am getting a Simmons Beautyrest with a layer of memory foam topped by a 1" layer of laytex. It seems to be to be a great combination. Simmons does offer many options on what to put above their coils - and offer soft (plush) coils or stiffer (firm) coils.

It will be a couple weeks before I get it as they have to order it (especially since you cannot get an actual king sized mattress of this construction into my 2nd floor - so I have ordered 2 XL Twins (which match up to a king size bed).

Have a great day - and I'm looking for a great nights sleep when they get here.

Perry has already decided, but I wanted to chime in for those who may use this thread for reference later.

We got a new mattress in May...latex, no springs. I have never slept better!!! We got 100% latex pillows as well and I love them! I am sorry we didn't do this years ago. I barely feel my husband turn over and I no longer toss and turn through the night. You also don't sink into the mattress like you do with memory foam and it is not hot at all.

For those with one nearby, we got ours at The Original Mattress Factory. They make 2 matresses with a latex core...a thicker one that is softer overall and a 9" one that is a little firmer. We went with the 9" one because my husband wouldn't have been able to handle the soft one. But we both love the one we chose! Oh, and another plus to these mattresses is that they are 2 sided and will last twice as long! I'll never even have to think about what kind of mattress to buy in the future!

I absolutely swear by our knock off Tempur-Pedic mattress - not really knock off but different brand. This one has coils in the foam for better back support. I have a back injury from a car accident and this mattress helps SOOOOOOOO much. I wake up with no aches or pains. When I sleep on other mattresses, even comfy ones, I wake up with my back killing me.

I say soooooooooooo worth it!

I will chime in and in spring got a Simmons beautyrest bed and I love it as much as when we got it (recommend). Unlike you I am budget-conscious. However since it was on sale the entire set was in the 500s. I recently got a bed for my mom, again on a budget. Unfortunately the bed I got for myself was no longer on sale so ended up getting a serta Tranquil Sands for her. Hasn't been yet delivered so I can't tell you how it's working out

With our old mattress we got a latex topper and so I have nothing bad to say about the latex. It gave us an extra year on that bed. Previous to that we tried a memory foam pad (as well as other pads) and I liked the feel of the latex so much better. Basically the latex "pushes up" so even though it cushions, it feels supportive and you don't have to extricate yourself from the bed in the morning.

I really think it's helpful to go to the stores and try the beds on for size. When we trying beds, when we got to the one we ended up buying, we were both, hmm. Hmm, this is really comfortable.

The only thing I advise against is getting padding beyond what you need to be comfortable. Those top fluffy layers in a pillow top often get depressed before rest of the bed wears out and then people find the depressions uncomfortable. If you need those extra top fluffy layers I would get it as a separate pillow top that can be replaced.

Perry how exciting! It sounds like a very good combination, hope you enjoy your bed when it arrives!

We bought a 100% latex mattress from Costco this May and it is amazingly comfortable. So much so that when we just had to sleep on another one for the weekend, we were both miserable. I highly recommend it, and we went with Costco because their return policy is so great we knew if we had any problems they would take it back.

Perry I hope your new bed is everything you are hoping for! A good night's sleep is so important!

I just wanted to add my voice in support of latex mattresses and pillows. We have both in organic latex, and they are so comfy and not hot at all!
