The process of finding a diamond and then a setting that will compliment the diamond is one that contradicts how we''ve come to expect instant gratification in our daily lives in today''s society.
I certainly COULD HAVE walked into a jewelry store and bought an engagement ring that was pre-made, to later learn that the size was wrong for my girl, and that the diamond was not the quality that I thought it was, or that the particular setting that I chose was not a good quality. I could have had an engagement ring in the time it takes to order a Big Mac.
So many things could have gone wrong if I would have just walked into a chain jeweler and bought just whatever appealed to me. Which I have, in the past, just walked into a jeweler and bought a ring for a girl, who was satisfied with the ring... as was I... because we knew no better.
By selecting your stone and your setting, you have a lot more communication with the jeweler, and you learn a lot about the stone and setting (from forums like this and from websites)... all of which denies instant gratification.
We live in a society that if you want something, you just go get it, and then it''s yours (provided you have the means/resources/can afford what you want.)
Only a week into the process of educating myself about the stones, and trying to find the right diamond, I have talked to more people about jewelry than I have in my entire life. It seems I have befriended the local jeweler, he knows my name. Folks here have been very helpful. Online jewelers have been very helpful.
Still, no ring, no instant gratification. No Big Mac. I have began to wonder how long the process really takes... and if she will appreciate it all. I feel like it is a game of ping pong where I have served and I wait for my opponent to hit the ball back. Then I will hit the ball back to him, and he will hit the ball back to me... We will have to communicate with each other (the jeweler and I, forum members and I) until we have selected the right diamond and the right setting.
Wow, how long does the process usually take? I can see how the process of educating yourself about the diamond, gathering information about the stone and setting would deter people from making a hasty decision.
At first, my goal was to save some money by building my own ring... but since the beginning of the journey I have realized that I want the highest quality ring I can afford, and since have raised my budget to accommodate the ring I want.
This certainly is not a process like ordering a Big Mac where you have instant gratification...
