The Pet Bird Thread

1. What kind of bird do you have?
I have a sun conure.
2. Your bird's gender, age and name.
Soni is an approx. 15 year old male.
3. What is the bird's diet? Any surprising foods?
He eats pellets supplemented by fruit and veggies as we have it in the house. His favorite snacks are raw noodles and shredded mozzarella cheese.
4. Is birdie tame? Was birdie a hand-fed baby?
He sent as tame as he used to be, but I hand fed him myself from about 4 weeks, I think. He was still covered in pin feathers.
5. If there are other pets in the house, what are they and how does your bird get along with them? Who's boss?
He bosses the cat around. The cat is scared to death of he bird, even though they've never been out in the same room at the same time.
6. Whats the best and the worst thing about your bird?
He hates men, especially hubby :(
7. Tell us about notable qualities or stories about your bird.
If he sneaks out of his cage, his favorite trick is to open and climb into his food container.
8. How much time is spent in the cage vs. out of the cage daily?
Sadly, he's mostly in, because of how poorly he and hubby get along.
9. Do you have playgrounds or perches around the house for birdie? Pics please.
Playground on the top of his cage.
10. Are the wing's clipped? If so has your bird ever flown.
Nope. They were from such a young age, he never learned, and once I saw how bad he was even with his flight feathers, I quit.
11. Does birdie have a favorite human in your home?
He loves me the most, and enjoys when my mom visits him.
12. Is birdie friendly with strangers?
Meh, not so much. He doesn't like men, and children freak him out.
13. Does your bird ignore or love toys?
He loves them! He has one in particular that he loves, a small length of chain with oblong wooden blocks on it,with a bell on the bottom. He leans way off one perch o grab the chain, drags it to another perch, and then grabs he top of the bel and just jingles it like a mad man. I think it's hilarious!
14. How often does birdie get a bath?
As needed, since he fits nicely into his dish.
15. Does your bird breed?
Nope.
16. Is your bird being noisy a problem?
Nt often. He likes to squawk when I first walk in the door, and when I'm on the phone. I just walk away from him, or hide in the bathroom. he's usually too busy giving hubby the stink eye to yell at him.

Do you have any idea why Soni hates men?
Can you trace it back to a negative experience?

Don't tell Puppy I said this, but I think the Sun Conure is one of the most beautiful birds, if not THE most beautiful.
It's like they are meant to camouflage with rainbows.

Gasp!

I've not seen a sun conure before.

Holy doodle.

Prettiest bird I've ever seen for sure.

Sorry Zee.

I have no idea why he hates men. He just always has. He's gone after hubby, and left some nasty marks. There have been no traumatic instances to cause it, that I'm aware of.

If Soni is a male, then perhaps he has pair-bonded with you and is keeping hubbie away from his mate???

Interesting theory, but I don't think we're quite that close :) No regurgitating, no attempts to... well, ya know...

I think a little bit of the issue is we walk by his cage wearing towels (he's between the bathroom and bedroom) and he hates towels (see above notes re: toweling for toenail and wing trimmings). He gets agitated when I walk by with one in my hair, and he gets downright vicious when hubby walks by with one around his waist. I think it ma also partially be a lack of male contact in his early years, as hubby and I didn't live together until he was about 5, and my when I lived at home with him, it was my mom, myself, and my brother, who kept his distance.

This was my instant reaction as well. Hubby is the competition. :Up_to_something:

It actually wouldn't even matter if Soni was male or female. I've worked with plenty of birds that have pair-bonded with someone of the same sex. The heart wants what the heart wants lol.

'Tis true.

Zee keeps trying to convince me that we should make a go of it.

I guess the hubbie could just go to hell...

Here's a couple of old pictures I had of Fred. He loves to sit on my lap and whisper sweet nothings to me.

Not my pets but last year when we went to Bali we were fortunate enough to go to a bird park. I was in my element. I could have stayed all day to play with the birds...

Thank you minousbijoux and CrazyBirdLady. I wish i had taken some more while we were there. (and taken home a macaw  )

What a great thread and all your lovely birdies! These are mine. Love them to pieces!

Max my Congo African Grey - I got him at 6 weeks with pin feathers and still eating birdie mush. He is 15 now and has a 100+ word vocabulary. He uses sentences in context and makes all sorts of household item noises. Answers the phone when he hears it, has an unintelligible conversation, and then says "ok bye bye."

This is Casey my Goffin cockatoo. She gets in all kinds of trouble and is a very busy bird. Casey is 9 years old and I got her as a handfed baby.

Hawaiianorangetree, what an amazing collection of birds you got to interact with.
I am jealous.

Redwood66, Max and Casey look like a handful of beautiful fun.

Here's what our Senegal Parrot does to flip flops when I'm out of the room.

It's like having a kid.
If it's quiet, you KNOW something's wrong.

OH NO! What a sneaky little stinker! I used to have a cockateil that would nibble on earrings while he sat on your shoulder. He'd ruined more than one pair of earrings. He pulled stones out of earrings, and majorly dented those puffed ball earrings. My current stinker doesn't like to sit on shoulders, though (thank goodness, he'd make me go deaf!).

Oh my goodness kenny! Bad little birdy! Casey can tear stuff up like nobody's business but Max is not so adventurous.

This is my nephew, Sammy. He is a beautiful sun conure. Not sure of his age. He loves to sit at the dining table and will eat most people food. He is partial to my BIL and will bite. Oh, his favorite meat is beef.

one more of Sammy on his Daddy's shoulder....
