I would first like to thank you all for the loads of great information here, and I have to admit I have been lurking for some time now. Now for the first post....

The time has finally come and I am starting my search for the "perfect" stone. I have a good budget ($10-13k) and have done my homework, but would still like to have the opinion of the "experts". Who am I kidding, I have only seen about 5 diamonds in my life up close (and honestly, they all look about the same to me).

I have been looking at stones over 1.5ct and was thinking about stretching to something just a little larger (1.7+), but still south of 2cts. My girlfriend has a size 2.5-3 finger, so we decided anything over 2ct was just not practical for her tiny fingers.

I have settled in on the G-H color range and SI-1 clarity (eye-clean). From the stones I have seen in the B&Ms this clarity grade seems to bring a nice value as I can barely see anything, especially not with the naked eye. And the G-H seems to be the value play here as well, near colorless. Of course, I would want to go with an ideal cut, H&A, AGS0, etc.

My question is this, would I be better suited going with a nice 1.5ct in a premier cut grade and maybe a VS2 or stretching to the larger maybe 1.7-1.8ct but stay in the SI1 and maybe not get the highest cut grade. I would like to hear any feedback form anyone with experience with these size stones on such small hands, or just in general. I am going all in on the stone, so all of the money can go there and I am going to let her design the final setting later. Then she can have exactly what she wants to be wearing.

Any help will be much appreciated, THANK YOU!!!

JB

Looks to me like the 1.5 range meets your budget expectations best!

Size 2.5 - 3 finger?! I don''t like her already!

Absolutely kidding! She is a lucky (little) thing and you are a lucky man - smaller fingers = rock looks bigger!

I think you will find around here the saying goes - Cut Is King! A really well cut stone will look bigger and sparklier than a stone with a lower cut grade. I think on those beautiful little fingers, the 1.5ct is going to look plenty big enough so I would stick with the slightly smaller size and get a killer stone with a top cut.

I think you are making a wonderful decision going all out on the stone and picking her dream setting later. She is going to be blown away with the stunning stone, and then gets to help pick the perfect setting - coudn''t be better.

Here is an I colour, you may want to consider (if you have seen G-H stones in B&M stores, they may not have been the greatest cuts, a top cut like ACAs will face up whiter, so you may want to consider this one:

Good luck, keep us posted.

Just a few suggestions, I might be able to find some others.

Well said DS - we were posting at the same time!

How do you get the WF discount when checking out? I think I am going to buy it and take a look. I have another coming in as well for comparison.

Call them in the morning. They are in Houston so keep the time in mind. Those are great stones! You are very lucky to have that kind of selection because the H stones go very quickly!

Go figure, I am also in Houston.

Sounds great, huh? Not so great when you read the fine print....I have to pay an 8.25% sales tax!! That is another $1,000!! May need to try and find an online retailer located outside of the state.

Just my luck!!

Oh, shoot! That is both wonderful and terrible at the same time! You could actually make an appointment and see all those stones we listed!

This would be the other contender:

But honestly, if I lived in Houston and could physically go see those stones, it would be worth it to me to pay the tax. Or else I would move out-of-state temporarily.

You live so close, why not see them in person? It''s a win win, but feel the pain about the Tax. Best of luck!!

What2Do? - Pay the sales tax - trust me! Since I posted this morning, my ACA arrived from WF this afternoon. I can''t tell you how stunning it is in real life ! I am TOTALLY BLOWN AWAY!!

I have seen other ideal cuts and good GIA triple excellents here in Australia, but they don''t compare to an ACA.

So, if you havn''t got my subtle hint

, I would recommend spending the extra money for the tax and know you are getting a fabulous stone. Even my partner who has never had a second look at a diamond in his life was truly impressed!

Good luck!

honey22, I hope we can see hand shots! I love, love, love the two tone ring you chose after seeing the WF picture. Congratulations!

Thankyou Imdanny - but no handshots yet. SO hasn''t officially proposed (torture, the ring has a loud voice and is screaming at me from the safe), but as soon as he does, I will post plenty of pics!

We do set appointments, What2Do, if you''d like to see the stones in person.

In your case where you''re trying to maximize size in your budget, having local access is a huge plus. You can see the diamonds yourself and determine how color/clarity sensitive you are. If it turns out you don''t see a color difference, you might be able to flex your parameters to get into the size you''d like and still stay within budget.

When I was a consumer, I thought I''d need a higher color. By the time I actually saw well cut stones, I realized that the cut masks color and inclusions, and it allowed me to drop in color/clarity to maximize size.

I''d save the sales tax and go with this one
