The Parrot

A young man named John received a parrot as a gift. The parrot had a
bad attitude and an even worse vocabulary. Every word out of the bird''s
mouth was rude, obnoxious and laced with profanity. John tried and
tried to change the bird''s attitude by consistently saying only polite words,
playing soft music and anything else he could think of to "clean up" the bird''s
vocabulary. Finally, John was fed up and he yelled at the parrot. The parrot
yelled back. John shook the parrot and the parrot got angrier and even ruder.
John, in desperation grabbed the bird and put him in the freezer.
For a few minutes the parrot squawked and kicked and screamed.
Then suddenly there was total quiet. Not a peep was heard for over a minute.
Fearing that he''d hurt the parrot, John quickly opened the door to the freezer.
The parrot calmly stepped out onto John''s outstretched arms and said,
"I believe I may have offended you with my rude language and actions.
I''m sincerely remorseful for my inappropriate transgressions and I fully intend
to do everything I can to correct my rude and unforgivable behavior."
John was stunned at the change in the bird''s attitude. As he
was about to ask the parrot what had made such a dramatic change in his
behavior, the bird continued,

May I ask what the turkey did?"

I wish it were that easy. Days of prepping and hours of cooking...all for fifteen minutes of chowing down. Then it''s another hour of cleaning. And then there is the rest of the holiday season...more food. I think I''ll hire someone this year

I ease the hours of cooking by adapting my favorite turkey recipe from Bon Apetite! It calls for basting the bird every 30 minutes with a nice dry white wine. I baste the cook each time I baste the bird. Makes the hours fly by.

I''m making bourbon mashed sweet potatoes this year..I may have to sneak a few shots before I start mashing. The best part is that the bourbon isn''t cooked out. You put it in after all the cooking

It actually burns a little on the way down. LOL

I usually cook up a storm but due to Elmo''s injury, I am -gasp- catering it this year. it''s just my mom and her parents anyway this year. We have an outstanding local restaurant (Zagat-rated three stars) we''ve been going to for years...The chef/owner knows us and I asked him to do us a special favor and cater Thanksgiving and he said yes! He reviewed the entire menu with me, down to the herbs he uses in his stuffing, so I feel pretty good. Normally, I do the bird in the oven bag too, with TONS of herbed butter and the meat falls off--just like Steve said--the bones just collapse.

My family has rented a house on Santa Rosa Beach, FL, starting Wednesday. Lots of eating, lazing around, walking the beach and playing GAMES!!! Family Charades is truly an event!

Everyone have a safe and happy holiday.
