Why can't the powers that be make a decision on this and teach it one way in the future?
I have no idea who they are but there must be some entity that schoolbook English textbooks answer to.

I didn't even know it was an option to use! We were always taught it was wrong to add that "extra" comma. Who knew. I guess you learn something new everyday. I do get annoyed when people don't put two spaces between the end of one sentence and the beginning of another.

I do as well. When I was younger, I remember getting into a debate with my parents about it, because they were not taught to use it in their journalism classes.

I must have been taught to use it at some point because I do, but I know I have had people edit my work and remove that last comma so know it must no longer be considered correct. But-but- it introduces ambiguity when you leave it out and that bugs me.
