Sending poop and pee dust. This week seems to be a weird foaling week. I have an AQHA friend who''s mare foaled last night and only JUST got up to feed baby. She''s been sleeping since she passed the placenta!!!!!

Has anyone chosen their derby horse yet? Mine is Tiz Chrome


Also Rolex begins this weekend and it is a record high number of entries.

DF that is super weird about the mare sleeping... is this her first foal? Have they had the vet out?? That situation screams fever/infection to me....

Vet was out, nothing seems to be wrong, her temperature was normal, she is hydrated... they''re giving her some electrolytes. Second foal.

Hey Ladies,

My friends Mare maybe out of the woods. Her colon flipped the RIGHT way (how often does THAT happen?!)...All was well until the vet realized she was still compacted. Continued to pump fluids, and she has had 2 movements but is still very weak. The owners were up all night with IV''s attached, but the mare seems to be slowly coming around. Foal is doing well too, and all this hands on time will do wonders for her temperament.

Thanks to you guys for being so concerned....the dust must work

Thats great news she made it through the night and with what happened....wow.....Hopefully there wasn''t much damage done and she will recover!!!

Hi Everyone!

Hope everyone is having a good week and horsey are happy and healthy. Just checking in with a request for Clipper reviews. My 10year old dinosaur clippers finally kicked the bucket and I do NOT want to spend another 200 bucks on a new pair. I have been seeing some Wahl''s for 50-100 range and wondering if anyone has any experiences with them?

If you really like another brand too, let me know... I am all about searching "the bay" for some steals...

hey sorry I didn''t respond about sleepy mare. She seems to be fine now and foal is happy as a lark!! So strange... They kept her on the electrolytes for a day, but nothing else.


I rode bareback again the other day, so much fun. Need to do it again tomorrow and this weekend.

TB, I''m so glad to hear about your friends'' mare! Colic is so scary. Bunnies get it too (they really are mini-horses) so I totally understand going through that even though I don''t have a horse. So stressful.

Digestively, bunnies are almost identical to horses. They''re fairly similar behaviorally as well! It''s not called colic in bunnies, but it''s exactly the same. Hannah also needed her molars filed down a few weeks ago.

HA! Red is getting this done even as we speak! LOL! And I pull a sneaky trick on him whenever it''s time for his dentist visit: He''s absolutely HORRIBLE about getting his sheath cleaned. I mean he will completely freak out and try to KICK YOUR HEAD RIGHT OFF!!! So, I always get the vet to do it while he''s under sedation for his dental exam. I know . . . I''m an evil mommy!

Elrohwen: Thx so much for the concern. Momma and baby seem to be doing well so fingers crossed there was not too much damage done and everyone stays healthy. So weird about the buns! I had NO idea they could colic too. I can''t imagine filing their teeth though. Do you do that by hand, or with a mini power tool??

Back to the clippers, there are a pair of new Wahl''s and a pair of new Osters on ebay... comparable in size, speed and blades with out going into detail, do either one of those brands stick out as better clippers? The old ones I had for like 10 years were Osters. Fairly happy with them and how long they lasted but I paid an arm and a leg and they were SUPER heavy. I am not sure if their "cheaper" versions stand up that well.

I know he''d never intentionally hurt anyone (although he talks a good game sometimes!), but I definitely think he could get a little out of control just from being scared/upset and possibly hurt himself or someone else by accident. Chestnuts . . . sigh.

My vet uses a power float and she just wont do it with out a little sleep shot... not worth a slip up of the tool if a horse freaks, and I am sure she would like to keep her hands/arms attached !!

Can we add Bay''s to that list of PITA TB''s?

I don''t know . . . I''ve met some exceptionally well-behaved bay TBs, so I bet you''ve got it pretty good! LOL!

When I first met SO he had NEVER heard of this practice. He seriously thought I was insane for reaching up and cleaning that! He couldn''t get over the cleaning jelly! LOLOLOL

TB, I don''t really know what tool they use for bunny teeth, but they do knock them out - not full anesthesia, but they do have them sleep so they don''t clip the tongue or something. They really should wear their teeth down on their own, but some bunnies have issues. Fingers crossed it was a one time thing for Hannah because I don''t want to go through that every 4 weeks. Especially since she didn''t eat for 3 days afterwards and I had to force feed

I learned the other day that bunnies can even have lethal white overo - it''s not called the same thing, but it''s basically the same disease. So weird!

Ohhhh, aren't they just GROSS?!?!

When I first got Red from the horse rescue, his sheath was in DIRE need of cleaning. I tried a couple times to do it myself, but he just was NOT cool with that! So, since I needed to get his teeth done too, I just had the vet do it while he was conked out (which worked out well, and that's how we've handled it ever since). I wasn't there at the time, but she said she had to give him ANOTHER dose of anesthetic after she did his teeth, because he started to "get antsy" when she started on his sheath! I was like, "Yeah, I'm soooo not surprised!" LOL! So finally, she was able to get everything cleaned out. She saved the bean and showed it to me. OMG, it was HUMONGOUS!!! She said she didn't know how he was able to pee! Seriously, it was like the size of a ping-pong ball!!!

No, nothing like SCID. I think that''s a bit too horse specific (and Arabian specific). Mostly they just have a lot of teeth and GI issues

elro - I"m surprised you knew it was Arab specific for some reason but HOORAY for knowing. I actually am moving out of arabian circles... but thought it might be interesting if bunnies had anything similar. Or the dreaded HYPP for that matter.


I am now researching QH running and ranch lines as I am moving into speed horses. I also am doing a bit of in depth research with Thoroughbreds. I''d like to see what sires statistically are siring well when it comes to running with comparison to bone density. I was severely upset when I found out my first Derby Choice Tiz Chrome was euthanized for a broken leg and yet three others pulled for leg related issues.

Well, HYPP and SCID are both traced back to one mutant gene in one specific horse, right? They''re not really "horse" diseases but specific mutations, which is why bunnies don''t have them. The lethal overo thing is more related to white coloring and there are some other white linked diseases in other animals for whatever reason. But pretty much any basic digestive issue is the same in bunnies and horses because of the way their systems work. And their diet is basically identical (lots of hay).

At least they don''t have the leg issues! Too low to the ground for that

I think it''s such a shame that TBs have so many leg injuries. I wish they weren''t allowed to race until 3 - starting a 2 year old in such a demanding sport is just cruel I think.

ohh fun research... My DH barrel races and I am CLUELESS when it comes to those speed sports. Well I guess I used to be clueless. He started teaching me all about speed indexes for the Racing AQHA horses and that''s pretty cool. It was so foreign to me as the TB''s don''t do it/record like that. His most recent barrel mare was off the AQHA track with a speed index of 103. I am told that evidently is smoking fast

. DH was VERY proud of that little know tidbit. We always go tit for tat over who''s horse is faster... wow, we sound like a bunch of 5 year olds.

The TB''s now are having so many MORE issues, I really feel like its because we keep messing with their running surface, for goodness sakes pic one! Turf or Dirt. I am NOT a fan of the synthetic tracks and all the promises of it being better for the horses, seems to me there are a lot more injuries with that footing.
