True, DF, true. But WHATEVER you do, DO NOT EVER accuse a Paint person of owning a QH . . . they will seriously GO OFF on you!!! LOL!

Because you know, a solid/breeding stock paint or a solid/breeding stock appy is still a paint/appy

That''s like saying a dun is still a palomino because it can have a palomino baby. And don''t get me started on Sabinos

Fab thread I LOVE HORSES. Thank you for starting it.

I thought I would take the opportunity to introduce myself - my name is Samantha and I am addicted to horses.

I have loved horses since I can remember, I truly believe it is an addiction that you are born with. No one in my family was horsey, but I can''t ever remember not wanting to ride horses. My first ever riding experience was in the middle of Winter when I had bronchitis when I was ten and it was wonderful. His name was Dartagnan and he was a gorgeous chestnut gelding.

It took until I was 39 for me to get my own horse. A 14.1 bright bay, welsh x mare who I had on loan for five years. She is currently away with her owners on maternity leave and due to give birth to her first foal in May. Hopefully she will be back with me by Spring 2011. In the meantime I have been borrowing friends horses, but I am looking at loaning something for a short time to tide me over. I am going to try a lovely mare at the weekend in fact.

Our yard has a real mixture of horses and ponies, including a quarter horse and three of the very few Rocky Mountain Horses in the UK.

I hope to have some pictures to put up soon and love looking at anything to do with horses as my poor DH reminds me all the time

Irish - I think the breeding stock thing is ridiculous. TECHNICALLY any quarter horse could be breeding stock then.... as they are solid... and can produce paints.

Silly

Samantha - Welcome aboard!!!! It sounds like you have a real passion! It is rare, and it is wonderful. I can''t wait to see pictures! Have you thought about buying and simply making payments?

Hi Dragonfly

Thank you for the warm welcome. I would love to buy my own horse. I opted to loan in the beginning as it was an easy route in without too much responsibility should it all go wrong and not work out. I would love more than anything to buy the mare I have had on loan for the past few years, and her owner knows that. My plan is to pin her down soon and get some committment in respect of what is happening post foaling. I don''t want to be in this situation again as it has been very stressful and distressing to lose her after having her all this time. My alternative then is to look to buy something else. At the moment I am seriously considering looking at Paso Finos as I love the gaited breeds after riding the Rockies, or a PRE Spanish Riding horse, which I love the look of and the temperament sounds amazing. It is going to be interesting for me in the next year I think.

I don't run in Western circles and have *never* understood this thinking. I'm glad I'm not alone on that! But then I'm used to horses just being "warmbloods" without anyone caring whether they're Dutch, or Hanoverian, or whatever (or if they're half TB even!).

Ok, so Otto is clearly a paint. Not sure what my other bun is - she's bigger than him, but also "pinto" colored. Maybe we can call her a percheron, since she's light grey and white. She's also stocky all around while Otto just has a big bum

Welcome Samantha! I can''t even imagine how hard it is for someone to take "your" horse away! Ugh. I really hope you can buy her and make her yours once and for all. Or else I''m sure you''ll be able to find another wonderful horse to own.

I''m so jealous of all of you and your horses! When DH and I move somewhere cheaper I am absolutely getting a horse. Actually, DH wants to own land, so there''s a chance we could have a horse on our own property (though part of me would like to just board and have someone else deal with getting up at 6am, mucking stalls, and buying expensive jumps).

El, I don''t run in Western circles either! In fact, my friend with the "breeding stock paint, NOT Quarter Horse" is something of a dressage queen, if you can believe it! LOL! Takes all kinds!

And I think we need to see pics of your other bunneh in order to designate a breed for her!

I don''t ride, but my daughters do. The older one is 12, and she just started jumping, which she LOVES. She also volunteers at a horse rescue farm here in the DC area.

My younger daughter is 10. She took an 18 month break from riding but is back in the saddle this spring and loving it.

The barn where they take lessons is pretty laid back, which I like. The girls don''t compete - I''m not sure our family is ready for either the time or $$$ commitment there!

Ok, Em, here''s a pic of Hannah. She''s not gigantic, so I don''t know if draft is fitting, but percherons aren''t that big

I love hearing about youngsters who love riding. It is such a wonderful thing to grow up with. I think parents should take comfort knowing that their girls are at the barn instead of partying or doing other crazy nonsense teen things. Laid back barns are so nice too as they really encourage variety and play which is SO good for developing a good seat and a good mind as a rider!

do you ever feel as if yours are talking with you? This morning I swear my oldest had a conversation with me. He was looking out his door with the most excited expression... like he just KNEW I was there to let him out. I said "Are you ready?" and he whinnied lol.

ALL.THE.TIME. My husband has entire conversations with the horses and I swear they understand each and every word. You should see the way my TB looks at us, (she probably just thinks were loony) but I swear she looks like she is listening and formulating her answer. HA!
9.gif

I talk to all of mine... I feel like they understand some of it. Actually UF has done some recent studies on just how much they understand.

I can''t wait for tomorrow... Saturdays are my all day horse days. Baby and old man in the morning (plus I''ll massage my sister''s horse), then general lesson this cremello mare who is super fun... she''s really feisty... she challenges me... and me her. Then barrel lessons and massaging the two mares she has in competition, and I''ll probably ride her green colt again... he''s sooooooo lazy... just clomps along at the lope... but I like how quirky his personality is.

Holy smokes DF, I would need oxygen after a day like that! I remember riding that many back in college... not so much anymore.

I am excited its nice out today, schooling with Rose tonight. Going to try her in a running martingale... she frames up nicely but only holds it for like 4-5 strides then wants to get all strung out and tosses her head. Hopefully the martingale will give her something else to think about other than running the reins through my fingers
29.gif

DH and I will pack the trailer tonight too, going to take Rose out to a local show and play around on sat. I doubt I will even enter into anything, but the sights and sound will do her good. She'll get to see all the activity. One of my GF is meeting me out there with her WP gelding 5yr old. So schooling show all around. It will be nice b/c we wont have to be there at the crack of dawn since we are not technically entering anything, just there for the atmosphere.

I like little local open shows like this, little jumping, little HUS, WP, and even some speed events. Good group low pressure. Maybe I'll even get a picture or two snapped of Rose!

And don't think I wont have my show clothes in the trailer JUST in case Rose is having a reallllllly good day schooling
27.gif

TB, does she have the training/muscles to rock back on her hind end yet? That may be part of the problem with getting strung out. Once she is able to use her hind end properly her head and neck should be in a frame naturally.

Hi Elro!! She does have both, how much of both is in question. She is very very in shape, but just like us in shape doesn''t mean she is in shape enough or has enough muscle memory to hold her frame for long. She has gotten better in the 2 weeks I have owned her, but she realllllly likes to test me. She has the training. Her career before the Eventing trainer got a hold of her was dressage...she just likes to push my buttons. That and she really needs to be warmed up well before she goes to work. I have to be on her working through the willies for about 20 minutes of nonsense before she puts her head down, stops chomping on the bit and does her job. She is very very smart and a total pleaser once she "warms up".

On a not so nice note, she did refuse a jump on me for the first time on sat. No warning, sneaky little bitty. She didn''t wander up to the jump ands she was forward and POW on come the breaks. My DH said she looked like she was trying out to be a reiner. LOL. Next time to the fence she didn''t even look. I think she''s toying with me

And for everyone''s viewing pleasure here is a pic of my TB mare enjoying the warm rays on Sunday afternoon

, I remembered as I posted on the random comments thread to mention that I happened into 2 pairs of the Kerrits performance breeches, they were on sale at one of the local tack shops. Terribly ugly color, which is why I suspect they were on sale, but my goodness, they are by far the most comfortable breeches I have ever put on! Shame my show ones aren''t as comfy. Just thought I would give you the heads up if you were looking again since you chimed in when I was asking for recomendations... and they do the "flow rise" thingy which is equivalent to the Ariat low rise waist!

She''s never offered to do it before, she typically is very brave, and scopey... I am going to chalk this one up to me not doing something I was supposed to, or unknowingly to me didn''t give her a que she was looking for. Fool me once shame on me, fool me twice back to the evil trainer you go.

TB - she is beautiful!

I cantered bareback for the first time in 5 years this weekend. I don''t know what made me decide I wouldn''t fall off (which has been my fear these past three months), but I just went for it. It was perfect.... we were perfect together me and my old man. I plan to do it again tomorrow

Congrats! How were your therapy appts this weekend?

Elro; lets hope she behaves because my checkbook would be empty if I have to send her back, lol. Besides it would infuriate me to pay someone to do what I can do... darn work life balance doesn''t leave me enough hours in a day to ride 8 hours a day

Little Bumpity bump.

I hate to even ask for it, but may I have some Horsey Dust for a friend?

An APHA breeder friend of my Husband and I...one of her mare''s whom she loves dearly just had a spunky little filly out of her beautiful APHA stallion. Foal is doing well but Mom wasn''t producing much milk and just wasn''t herself so they had vet out ASAP and they have found out she is quietly colicing after giving birth.
39.gif
They have her on IV''s for fluids and oil as well as some pain meds and the mare is at least comfortable.

They have found that her colon HAS twisted and she has a 50-50% chance of coming around, I do not know the surgery details yet (if they are planning it or not). I do know hand raising a foal is terribly time consuming and hard on everyone emotionally. Not to mention the owner is very attached to this mare, she would be totally heartbroken if putting her down really is what''s best.
7.gif
The couple has had a though run in 2010 with a few other horsey issues, so if from one equine lover to the next could we send a little "pooping" dust for a colicy mare? I would be grateful, and I know they would too.

Sounds like emergency surgery and fast is definitely needed here if the owners go for it, I know how risky it is but we do this op a lot here and a good number do make it - sending my STRONGEST dust for this mare and her Mom.

God I hate colic......
