I'm deeply saddened by the advancement (and likely passage) of the "Big, S̶h̶a̶m̶e̶f̶u̶l̶ Beautiful Bill." I encourage everyone to unbiasedly research the inherent repercussions to low-income households. By slashing Medicaid/ACA, education, and social services, which, in turn, will fund tax breaks for, you guessed it, corporations, the fossil fuel industry, and the wealthy, we will be widening the ever-growing wealth gap (i.e. the root of just about every problem we have in this country). Naturally, they threw in a few crumbs for news networks to tout and use as a diversion, such as federal tax exemptions on tips and overtime. What they didn't tell you was that tipped workers make up only about 2.5% of the workforce, and those who do earn meager overtime wages make up only about 12% of the workforce. Of course, workers will still have to pay all FICA taxes, along with state and/or local taxes. Further, a whopping 40% of tipped workers don’t even make enough money to have to pay federal income tax on their earnings. And yet, still no raise in the minimum wage to provide working people with a livable income. Why? Because it would make an actual difference... but not for the "right" people. It's difficult not to be angry with those responsible for voting-in these executives and legislators, but I'm still determined to try and make a difference rather than wallowing in my fury. Indeed, those voters include family and friends who I love immensely (and unconditionally).
I don't want to start a war with this post... but this has been weighing heavily on my heart. I appreciate the opportunity to vent to a community I respect.
