Since 1940 — when the Redskins moved to D.C. — the team’s outcome in its final game before the presidential election has predicted which party would win the White House each time but once (in 2004).

When the Redskins win their game before the election, the incumbent party wins the presidential vote. If the Redskins lose, the non-incumbent wins.


This afternoon the Carolina Panthers beat the Washington Redskins in D.C. 21 to 13,so if this trend holds true then we will have a new President in Jan.

yes,very accurate,it only failed once (2004) in the past 17 elections. In 2008 i congratulated all the PS Obama supporters on Sunday after the Pittsburgh Steelers 23 beat the Washington Redskins 6, in fact, on Monday the day before the election i paid all my friends since i knew Obama would win the next day...

Ugh, I second, third, quadruple this. There's a girl that I work with and she just blatantly asked me the other day who I voted for. I was like ummm... And she would NOT leave me alone until I told her. Rude.

Edit: Other than that, this prediction thing is pretty interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing if it works this year.

Well, since it's baseball, why don't you submit that "rule" to Nate Silver and see what he thinks about it? I bet he's using that very rule as the base algorithm for FiveThirtyEight, him being a sabermetrician and all...

ETA - Baseball, football, sport whatever. You can tell I don't like sports much beyond knowing it's a TEAM of some sort. ha.

I'm in Ohio and let me tell you how glad I will be when this is over. I feel like both Obama and Romney have second homes here. Today the freeway was shut down, COMPLETELY shut down for 45 minutes and no way to get off at an exit while Obama's entourage made their way into the city. It turned the entire freeway into a parking lot-- do you know how dangerous this is? Let me tell you about the skidding wheels sounds from those who weren't expecting a complete stop of traffic.
