I have been thinking about Memorial Day today. This evening my brother's mother-in-law called me to tell me she was thinking of the photo that I have of my father and mother, newly married, with him in his army uniform. He had just enlisted in the US Army and was about to spend several years overseas during World War II. Memorial Day is not really about men like him, who made it back. It is about those who have fallen in war and, also, those who have fallen due to their service in the armed forces. I heard on the news today that next year may be the first year that illness overtakes suicide as the leading cause of death among (young?) veterans. Death due to illness in young veterans has grown due to undiagnosed lung and bladder cancers caused by exposure to burning pits. More must be done to help our military. There are some things no on can do for them, except to honor them. I know that some women here have lost husbands, and one a brother, in war. Thank you all for their ultimate sacrifice.
