Funny!

I''m all for dry cleaning, but on the occasion that I do actually take out my ironing board it is definitely to the left!

I hate ironing boards though. They are so bulky. DH broke two of them since we''ve been married trying to collapse them. They never stayed back up after that... Did eventually get a new one but hate taking the damn thing out, oh wait that one is broken too... Anyway, I learned my lesson after I tried ironing on an area rug. Lesson learned: Must use stupid ironing board, never iron on carpets (that you like)...

Hee hee. El is right.

I am going to take lessons from Lorelei. <runs off to go practice whimper>

I would be glad to share some techniques and pointers on how to produce the most effective Hubby targeted ironing producing whimper!

1) First you need a good coat of mascara to flutter those lashes and make eyes puppy dog like for extra effect

Oh good lord.

Do I take it that you would like some more of my whimpering handy hints then?

2) Make eyes mist over so that there is a little tear visible ready to spill down cheeks.

the answer is...
towards the hand you use the iron in and iron from the opposite side you hold it in to the side you hold it in then out.
That way your off arm never crosses over the iron and you don't get a steam burn.
Which isn't as big an issue with a modern iron but if you ever use a flat iron you will get the message in a hurry!

storm who has actually used a flat iron lots of times.

nope but I have one like it around here some place in the stuff from my parents house I think.
They come in handy when on vacation and wanted to go to Church or if the power is out.
Out on the farm they were used until well into the late 80s along with the coal stove in the kitchen.

The point of the iron should match the taper of the board because when you do detail work and use the tip of the iron you can roll over the edge over rounded fabric (like sleeves, collars, etc). And you set the iron down on the wide part of the board, to the far right, out of the way, as you adjust the garment.

But whatever you get used to becomes the "right" way.

My parents used to have a flat iron at home somewhere. They never used it, but my mother remembers using one when she was younger. She told me they used to check the temperature of the iron on the bottom of a man''s shirt. The shirts had big long sections down the back that were for tucking into the pants and those were always covered in scorch marks!

I''m right handed and iron with the point of the ironing board on my left hand side. If I had to reach across myself or switch hands to put the iron down, I guarantee I''d burn something! My capability to scald myself is well documented here on PS

I hate ironing with a passion. My mother used it as a punishment when I was younger and I still resent it.

I have several flat irons I''ve gotten at antique stores. They make GREAT door stops. Never would want to use one to iron though, they weigh a ton.

Warm, someone who is good with one goes by handle temp to tell when it is ready and when it needs to be reheated.

The point is to the left and I am right handed. Just like my mother used to do. I iron alot - I HATE wrinkled clothes. I iron more in summer of course than winter due to the nature of the clothes.

When I am turning the clothes on the end of the board, I sit the iron down on the wide part to the right. If I turned the board the other way with the point to the right, where would I put the iron when I had to sit it down? Cross it over my work space and sit it to the left on the wide part? Must admit this is more thought given to the subject than I ever have but I think your hubby needs to do a hands on demo to see that what he is saying isn''t practical.

Once upon a time, my hubby started a discussion about there being more right hand turns on the road than left hand turns. He had some off the wall justification for it at the time - can''t even remember what it was! We still howl at the fact that he started that debate but he insists it is true. Funny what a man can come up with to argue about - ha!

TOO funny. Seriously.

Forget the demonstration. It's like Maise said in a thread earlier (partially quoted), it's just easier to rest quietly in the knowledge that I am right and he is not.

btw Maise, if you read this, that was so good, I am tempted to make it my sig, and I've never had a sig here since I joined.
