Ok, last night hubby and I are laying in bed watching TV. Youngest comes in and wants to iron a shirt (this is a first, the kid cares not about wrinkles). The board is already set up. I set it up the same way every time. Interestingly, in ALL these years, hubby has never said a word, until last night.

I have the tapered end facing to the left. I am right handed. Hubby says, "It should be facing the other way, it would be easier for right handed people". I just look at him, thinking, why after 26 years do you mention this now??
lol.gif
So I said, why would it be easier? He in turn asks me why I think it is, the way it is now. I go on to explain. He disagrees. (this was all friendly btw, lol)

Now, I''m right handed, so is he. However, he is definitely ambidextrous to an extent, so I chalk it up to that. He doesn''t buy it, says it should face the other way for right handed people. So, I said I would ask all of you lovely people to settle this. He thinks you all will prove me wrong. Maybe....

To the left the other way just seems weird, I am also right handed but like your hubby ambidextrous to an extent.

I would make him iron a load of clean clothes to prove your theory further

To the left, i''m right handed. The board i have has a teflon iron patch to sit the iron on on the square end.

I couldn''t remember the last time I ironed so I voted "What''s an ironing board?", but then I remembered! Sometimes when I go out of town on business I have to iron an outfit here or there, and I face the pointed end to the left! And I''m right handed!

Take that, Mr. Ellen!

I HATE how you cant get an iron at a hotel in Europe. I brought my full sized Rowenta iron with me for our honeymoon. Drives me nuts. 2 stars or 5 stars, it doesn''t matter, you cant get an in-room iron. The nicer palces will press your clothes for you in 24 hours for a fee... blah

I installed an in-wall iron system a few months ago at our condo... http://ironaway.com/ Best thing I''ve ever done... Has electricty and a light inside and stores the itron in the wall... oh and I have the pointy end face left and I''m right handed

Okay, I figured it out. It makes more sense to have the point to the left while ironing with your right hand because your right hand is farther away from your body and has more range of motion. If you faced the point to the right your right hand would be closer to your body when ironing and you would have less range of motion. So it''s more comfortable to do it with the point to the left.

To the left, and I''m left handed. I used to have a wall mounted ironing board (I lived in an apt. built in the 50''s, and man did I love that thing! I want DH to put on in my closet for me) and I stood so it pointed to the left too. But I can use it pointed to the right as well, it''s just not instinctual.

And yeah, it is tough to get a board in a hotel. sna, I wish we had a place to put one of those, but there just isn''t anywhere.

My Mom has something very similar in her houses... Just want to point out that if you were to walk to the other side you would have the point to the right! LOL

I am a righty and I keep the point to the left too!

Ellen~ What''s Hubby saying now??

LOL the funny thing is I sat here for about 20 secs and visualised how the ironing board is set up in the next room.

Same way as you Ellen!

I feel like if you had it pointed the other way, it would be really awkward to iron shirts since I tend to use the pointed end for things like that. Also, both of my parents do it that way too, so count 2 extra votes for your way!

How would Mr. Ellen know anyways?

*men don't iron*

Ok, this is really going to date me but my mother used to iron prefessionally back in her day. She even had one of those flat steamer things that you close the lid. I learned from her.....tapered end to the left and I''m a righty. PS....the flat steamer thingie also had a tapered end to the left.

LS, my guy actually does iron. I did it all for years, but finally said, You know what, you''re a big boy. I have enough to do, you can handle this.
5.gif
But WHY he waited 26 years to mention it is beyond me!!
lol.gif

ladyp, that''s exactly what I said to him in explaining why I thought my way was correct.
2.gif

I will add though, if there is ANY way I can grab something right out of the dryer and hang it up to keep me from ironing, I do!

I haven''t ironed in about 4 years, but when I did I set it up the way you do, Ellen!

Recently DH asked me if we HAD an iron. We do. Two of them actually. I just don''t intend to use them! I''m of the "take it out of the dryer immediately and you won''t have wrinkles to iron" group.

Wow, I''m going to have to go against the grain here and say that I point the tapered end to the right and I''m right handed...sorry, 1 point for Mr. Ellen!

This is actually really, really funny to me because one of my biggest and silliest pet peeves evah is when my ironing board is flipped so that the tapered end is to the right. I really do get

when its turned around (we keep it in the laundry room all set up).
