Hey Guys,

Big fan of the sight, thought I''d chime and get some opinions.

The proposal will still be a big surprise (she''s thinking it''s further out than it is), but we have talked some about rings and visited a few stores. Here''s what I''ve come up with...

A.) She''s always liked this ring, but she''s never actually seen it in person so I''m unsure. I also don''t have much hands on experience with palladium, the forum says?

B.) This was one of the first rings we looked at. She still really likes it though. This collection was our first exposure to well cut stones and we both fell in love with such beauties. The price is low for my budget and I''ve already chosen a diamond, so I can''t get this actual ring, I''d have to find something similar. Shame, cause it''s a darn pretty thing. in platinum maybe? =)

C.) This ring is definitely outside of my budget, but it may give you a further taste of her style...

Go to www.scottkay.com then Bridal, then ladies, then engagement, then contemporary, then page 6 top center(the 5 stone).
Sorry I can''t link to it, it''s in flash.

There are two more at a local jeweler, but unfortunately no pics online yet, I might have to go make some.

Clearly she likes the traditional, but as you notice, there are widely differing styles and sizes here!

SO...what do you think at this point A, B, C? (The center stone will need to be a RB .47ct) THANKS!

~JMP

P.S. I''ll add more about the diamond soon...=)

Hi there! Congrats on your upcoming engagement!

The rings you''ve posted are all pretty and for the size of the main diamond, I think the best options would be the first and second settings. The five stone style may take the focus off of the center stone. My favorite is the first setting, it''s elegant and has some nice styling in the band, but isn''t over the top either.

Just please choose what you think SHE will like, that is most important!!

Good luck!

Just makin' the links clickable so it is easier for folks to look.

What is your budget for a setting?

Thanks Ara Ann for the "What she likes" advice, I'll remember that. It is much easier to find what I like. =)

Jet2ks, I'm left with $1,800 for the setting now that I've found the diamond. It's not much, but it should suffice.

Speaking of...Here's the Diamond
Thoughts on the med blue fluoro???

Opinions on Palladium? How does it compare to Platinum?

Your diamond link isn''t working, but medium florescence is just fine! I had that on my first diamond and never saw the florescence. So it really is inconsequential.

We really don''t know what palladium looks like over a long period of time, so I''d stick with platinum to be safe. Here are some more to look at:

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-engagement-ring-setting-platinum_7491?filter_id=1&collection_id=236

actually, that one has a matching band, too

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-engagement-ring-setting-platinum_5857?filter_id=1&collection_id=236

I really feel like you need to keep the diamonds on the band small so as not to have the center stone disappear into the setting.

Heres a corrected link for the diamond

The diamond is really nice. If you want D color, that is fine, as long as you realize you are paying a premium for D and if you are open to something around a G, you would still have a very white diamond and be able to get a larger stone. There is no right or wrong, I just wanted to present options.

Since you are getting a diamond from GOG, I would call them and let them know what you are looking for as far as a setting. They have access to many more settings than what shows on the website and would be happy to work with you to find something you like.

Beautiful stone! I''d agree with the person above that I''d go to G color and get a larger stone unless D is something that she has requested.

It would make the process easier if you bought a setting from Good Old Gold since they would insure your diamond while setting it.

Great diamond! D VS1 is my dream spec.

I second DS2006 (as usual!). You also won''t have to ship the diamond around if you get the setting from GOG and it is comforting to know it will be insured while in their hands.

The setting ds2006 linked above from GOG are lovely and well within budget. $1800 is a great budget for setting I think. Good luck!

How about this Vatch via GOG?

Wow, great responses everyone. Thanks so much! I''m feeling the love already. =)

I agree DS2006, platinum is the way to go. I''m not sure about the 1st ring, but the second has promise. Thanks! Agreed, the side diamond need to be smaller. I''ll keep that in mind when looking. The "20104/catid/170" looks great too!

Thanks Jet2ks for posting the link. I am aware that I''m paying a premium for a D. I originally wanted an F VS1, but could not find one around .50ct and for the right price. So I switched to a .47ct D which is only .2mm difference facing up. I like the idea that even when comparing her diamond to others she will never find a whiter looking stone. Color is more important to her than size, so I don''t think I''m really sacrificing much. Besides, we can always upgrade later!
Amazingly, she does not want a large stone (thank God!), so I maxed out all the other qualities of the stone, Cut: Ex/Ex/Ex H&A, Color: D, Clarity: eye clean and likely loupe clean too, Carat: in the range she has been looking at (.34-.58ct), Fluoro: I actually like the Medium Blue Fluoro, I think it gives the stone some personality.

VRBeauty: That is a beautiful ring, I''m sure she would love that one. But the center stone setting is 1.0, I''m not sure it would look right with a .47ct. I might pursue it further in a local store.

Buying the setting online is what I would prefer, however, I need to buy from a local chain. As painful as that is for me. She LOVES to get her rings polished as often as possible (at LEAST once every 2 months). If I buy from a local chain she can pop in anytime she likes and get it polished or rhodium dipped for free. No matter where we wind up moving. I think she also has her heart set on something from Jared jeweler''s, since her and her friends have always had good experiences with them. Hunting online just gives me good ideas to see what Jared can do for me. Believe me, if I could throw Jon at GOG some more business I would.

Thanks everyone else, keep the suggestions coming. You guy''s are such a big help. =)

Ok, now I need an opinion. I was going to buy this stone...

www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/5842

But then I noticed this stone...

www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/5881

They are VERY similar (shame they won''t be earrings). But which one do you think is better? Is there something in the cut that is better than the other. Specifically comparing the helium reports?

~JMP

I'm not sure what you are looking at that would make you worried. They are both great stones. I don't see any reason to favor one over the other, the very slight differences would never be noticed unless you have people that carry scanners with them everywhere they go.

You're right, they would make a great matched pair for earrings.

Thanks, just paranoid I guess. Only get one shot at the surprise diamond thing. Just want to make sure I get it right.
