Ok, as i see it, there are pretty much three ways to get a ring. Same vendor thru the net at the same vendor for both the diamond and setting, diamond thru the net and then setting by a B&M or another net merchant, or B&M all the way. I''m wondering about the total process of each:

Net from the same vendor steps:
1) Research and express interest in diamond
2) Have it sent to an independent appraiser for verification
3) Purchase and have it sent back to the merchant for setting
4) Receive final product
5) insure (no need for insurance till you get it back)
- just to make sure, it''s covered by their insurance, the carriers, or the appraisers until delivery??? and is the appraisal before buying necessary?

Net to another net vendor or to B&M:
1) research diamond and express
2) have it sent to an appraiser
3) approve it and purchase
4) get second appraisal with the setting included in that appraisal
5) buy insurance
6) bring it to the setter or mail it to them
7) receive final product
8) have it appraised a third time as a completed piece
- can the second appraisal be done by the setter or at the same time as the rock appraisal?

Single source B&M
1) find the place which has it all
2) Buy both the and have it created
3) receive
4) have it independently appraised
5) buy insurance
- Do you need to have the rock appraised separately? or is that kind''a overkill because you assume the wouldn''t switch it before setting.

are these correct?

LS,

Pretty thoroughgoing processes...and none unreasonable.

There are different styles. For both 1 & 2, somewhat rigorous...some think not so necessary for trusted vendors, like GOG & WF (i.e. you might consider for them having it set first and only then sent to appraiser)...and also...you''ll want to consider more about why you''re using the appraiser. For step one, just for verification? If not a well regarded vendor, also use to help you judge performance, in which case, your selection of appraiser...since you''re going through all this, is important.

For #3, the aesthetic is there. Using a local jeweler, you can engage an appraiser, in consideration of the above...or you''re using them because you like them and trust them...in which case...do what you say.
