From my best friend looking for some last minute advice, "I am super close to finally pulling the trigger on the engagement ring! I have tried to do all of my due diligence in researching and reading as much as I can on here. I have looked online and locally. And once I started throwing out numbers of prices online the local jewelers have been very wiling to be competitive, and I would prefer to buy local. After looking around I have found one I think I am ready to pull the trigger on...

Round GIA certified
2.02 C
SI1
J
Excellent, very good, very good,

I am very happy with how it looks and really just want reassurance that I am spending the right amount. The dealer is very reputable and has been established for a long time. It will be $12,900 out the door and then they want to charge $900 for solitaire 6 prong setting with prongs in platinum and band in white gold."

Thanks for your help!

My gut reaction is that the price for the setting is high, but that's just my gut-- it could be a very well made piece but I would think that a basic 6-prong stock setting should only be a couple hundred bucks.

As for the diamond, there's so much variability...however I ran those numbers through bluenile, and there are several J/SI1 very good GIA diamonds on there for ~10800 so my gut says the diamond is high as well. But that is with almost zero information about how good it really is.

Hard to judge the diamond without further info such as an idealscope image. James Allen has triple excellents at 2 ct J SI1 in the $13k+ range, so that price is probably okay for local. Did you look at the inclusions with a loupe? Be sure you know what and where the inclusions are.

The setting is certainly too high unless it is a branded setting or something. I think $900 should be more than enough for a solid platinum 6 prong solitaire setting. I would not want white gold as it has to be replated.

All platinum $725:

18k white gold shank with platinum head $650:

So basically, I would tell them that $900 has to be all platinum.
