The Center Part. Feelings?

I’m about to wade into a minefield, lol! But I have strong feelings about this issue!

When I was growing up in the Eighties, having a centre part marked you out as a complete doofus, like something from The Monkees. No self-respecting teen would be caught dead with flat, center parted hair. We were all about the swishy, teased waves, with lots of root lift. Sammy Jo from Dynasty is a great example. We looked back at the Seventies and Ally McGraw with complete horror. We actually used to make fun of that era by parting our bangs and holding them plastered down to look as bad as possible for a laugh, like you’d cross your eyes. Of course, in those days the men were all clean-shaven, too. Steven and Jeff from Dynasty - yum! The hairy Seventies were a source of great mirth.

Today, it seems as every young woman has the flat Center part and every young man has lots of facial hair. During my formative years, everyone mocked these styles so much that I can’t believe they’re so ubiquitous these days. If you grew up in the Eighties, you would never, ever have guessed that facial hair and the flat Center part would ever see the light of day again.

I’d go for a full Texas blow dry anyway! I’m growing out my hair, and I want Eightiez feathers and waves, lol! Is it just me, or is the flat Center part just very unflattering unless you have perfect features?

Where do you fall? Center part? Side part? And what about root lift? I don’t think there’s anyone who can’t benefit from some root lift. Even animals. Fur lift!

I've always thought more people should go with the hairstyle that's best for them rather than what's most in style. And that varies so much depending on face shape (and face size), thickness of hair, how much time they want to put into styling it every day and etc. The same with men and facial hair imo.

I always thought it was about what suits us as individuals too. I thought my preference for the feathered luxuriant Dallas/Dynasty styles with lots of root lift was simply what I liked. But with the generation below me having such different styles to my own generation, it's made me realize how influenced we are by our eras.

Seriously, the center part/side part debate is a thing! Lol!

My 16yo tells me that you can instantly tell how old someone is by the fact that they part their hair on the side (me included!). "Young" "stylish" people part their hair centrally apparently.

Now I have 51yo hair just below my shoulders - so when I wear it up or straight I part it on the side, to me it looks better. When I curl it I'm now willing to wear it parted in the middle - I tried it on the weekend and I thought it looked quite nice.

This one says that a side part is aging, as are layers and curls. I feel personally attacked lol.

My hair naturally parts in the center so I don't fight it but you'll have to bury me in my voluminous blowout. None of that semi-flattened, wavy-middle-with straight-ends crap for me.

I think you should part your hair where it parts naturally. Other than that, do what you want, but try to do something that works for your hair type. Forcing hair to do what it doesn't want to do is either a failure, or too much work. At least that's my thinking.

Ha! What does your kid say about skinny jeans and top sheets? Bc evidently those are also passé.

It’s hip to be square? Yes, I part my hair the same way my 13 yo does.

The big permed hair I had in the 80’s would not fly now! :geek2:

Lol @MrsBlue. I can relate. And I was so hoping 1 1/2 inch gray roots would be in style.

@lulu_ma , Your hair looks beautiful!

My natural part is slightly off center which perfectly describes the rest of me including my mental state  Depending on my mood, I'll wear it parted right, parted left or parted center. I am so relieved to be of an age and confidence level where I'm immune from influencers. Kids haven't yet figured out that in their effort to be on trend, they end up all looking the same.

I say, do whatever you want.
Be "in style", or do your own thing.
Whatever you prefer.

For me? ... I say style schmyle. :hand:

For around 20 years I have just buzz cut my own hair at home.
Clean, cheap, fast, and simple.

@lulu_ma , I would be beyond thrilled to have your hair. I don’t see one gray hair in that picture.

Well top sheets are still a thing in this household but since she’s old enough to look after her bedroom and her washing, that’s up to her. Skinny jeans are definitely not a thing in her circle here in Australia. They seem to wear jeans at least 2 sizes too big “boyfriend“ style.

I’ve given up worrying about clothing styles - same with hair colour. I finally got my hairdresser to stop dying my hair so the grey is all there is. It took until we had a 3mth lockdown to convince her I would be perfectly fine with grey hair.

Or...or...hear me out on this...by looking at their face.

This is so funny. Just look at those silly IGs where some 20-something wears her hair 18 different ways with, like, a paperclip and rubber band. Try to spot the one where she suddenly looks old. :lol-2:

It reminds me of my spouse's observation after reading one too many "How to Look Great in Your 40s!" puff pieces. Apparently, the way to look great in your 40s is to have been a supermodel in your 20s! Thanks, Cindy and Heidi and various Jennifers...

Warren Buffet is 91 -- and he is still a billionaire! How does he do it?!? :P2

i have a side part
i switched sides durring the 80's as i have a big juicy cow's lick that was very uncool
almost all the girls at my high school had a fringe (bangs)

gotta have a top sheet !

My hair naturally parts just off center.
I let my hair do what it does. Curly, wavy, straight.
It has a mind of its own.
On any given day it does different things.

Part your hair wherever you please.
Do what works for you.

I don't follow what is poplar or trends.
I do what is comfortable and makes sense for me.

I don't care what anyone thinks of how I part my hair.
I don't care what anyone thinks about my hair color, my hair style, etc.

It's none of my business what others think of me. That is their problem.

@Daisys and Diamonds Don't get me started!

i went on a work trip once where we stayed at a [cheap] hotel overseas. Yay travel budget! I remarked that there was no topsheet on the bed and my colleagues said that no topsheet was necessary if there was a duvet cover.

So I experienced a bit of culture shock that day. I was shocked to learn my colleagues were barbarians and they were shocked that I was such a prissy miss.

I follow my natural hair parting. Growing up, it fell naturally to the side. The last few years, it was naturally in the middle. I don't fight it. Same with straight vs curls. I let my hair do what it wants.

When I heard nobody used top sheets anymore it really was surprising to me too. like “how could this be?!” But I also remember when my mother was astounded that I didn’t ever wear pantyhose. Lol

I...I just never cared enough to contemplate it.
It's floppy. It's hair. Treat it like a surprise and you'll never be disappointed.

Don't touch my flat sheet.

This is a genius observation.

Maybe the kids will looks back at our side parts and flat sheets as elegantly nostalgic--like how I feel about about doo-wop ballads and the smell of Coty powder.

I remember being a teenager back in the seventies when the center part was required. It let everyone know you were cool, much like the one pierced ear for guys. It's nice to see that today's children are finally learning to do things correctly haha.
