I finally bought my ring yesterday and just wanted to thank everyone for all the great information on this site. I was going to buy a diamond and e-ring from bluenile, but ended up getting a nicer stone for much less than BN would have charged me after being educated here.
At the risk of sounding like shill, this being my first post and all, I highly recommend Derco Jewelers at the SF jewlery mart. I ended up getting exactly what I wanted at an unbelievable price with great service and no pressure. They even beat the price on comparable stones on the pricescope search.
In case anyone is interested, I got a RB 1.26 carat, H, VS1, GIA cert (with AGS0 proportions according to the sarin info) set in a platnium Tiffany style ring for just under $8k. The stone scores well (1.6, I think) on the Holloway cut adviser and doesn''t have any other undesireable characteristics as far as I know (thin to med girdle, no flourescence, ex ex polish and symmetry, looked great to my untrained eye on the idealscope and is very, very sparkly).
Anyway, thanks to everyone who contributes. I''ll see if I can post pictures of the new rock next week.
