My budget wasn''t anywhere near what you all usually deal with, and I labored over reports, cuts, everything for many hours before I found this site. I just wanted a nice cheap diamond that wasn''t the size of a chip and would look really clean, even when closely observed. The cut adviser and threads here really helped me out.
Aside from the general advice and the Cut Adviser, the following thread on twinning wisps was particularly helpful:

You might want to add this one to your "Helpful threads" archive. The link to GoG which show how different inclusions look under magnification is great. My favorite line was Gary''s: "NO - IT''S NOT A DURABILITY ISSUE - IT IS A fear of durability issue. The greatest risk is you will be worrying about it and get squashed by a truck."
When I read that I went back to BN and clicked the Buy Now button, realizing that I was over-thinking everything.
I went with BlueNile, since, at my budget level, the usual vendors at this site just didn''t have anything, and (after reading here) I didn''t feel I could trust an IGL report since I was buying sight unseen.
I also went to a local jeweler to look at some stones and, while I could tell the difference between an H and an I in color, the SI1 stones looked okay to me, so I focused on color (after cut, of course).
I wound up with:
.537 ct
AGS 000 Cut
H Color
SI2 Clarity
Table 55.4%
Crown 34.9%
Pavillion 40.8%
Girdle 0.8% to 3.6%
The clarity markings were light except for two large twinning wisps running through the table. Turns out, the twinning wisps are totally invisible, though you can see them and the feathers/needles when looking through the side of the stone, which will prove useful if we ever need to identify it.
The stone set in platinum cost $1600, and when I saw it I knew it was exactly what I wanted to give to her. I proposed last weekend, she accepted, and she loves it.
