I am purchasing an engagement ring in the coming weeks, and just want to make sure that I''m getting a decent deal.

I have been talking back and forth with Dimend Scaasi and Solomon Brothers about a Gelin Abaci Tension ring that really want...I''ve talked them both down a couple hundred on the band. But the diamond prices are way different b/c one is GIA and one is EGL. From what I have read on the forum, I will be pretty safe if it is EGL-USA? Here is all the info I have on the EGL diamond from Solomon...(my budget is around $3000)

.78ct Round F VS2 Excellent Cut - $2300
Table 58%
Depth 59%
Girdle- Faceted
Polish-VG
Symmetry-VG
Flour- None
Cutlet- None
6.02-6.05x3.56
L:W Ratio- 1

Also, I asked a question on another forum and received the message below.
Is this worth thinking about? I heard that tension rings are pretty hard to make.

"If you send me a picture of the ring, I will locate a manufacturer for you and they will mfg. the ring at wholesale which is generally 1/2 the retail price" Les Keller, ARK Jewelers Inc. www.arkjewelers.com

Thanks for the help.

Sure, EGL USA is pretty ok.

I''m a little concerned about depth. 59 is a bit shallow. And in a tension, a nice, high crown looks pretty good.

If cost is really a factor, maybe titanium?

Thank you for the quick reply.

Yes, price is a factor. (I am still going to be a student for two more semesters.)

I was wondering why you are concerned with depth after looking at this chart... http://www.diamondarticles.com/diamond-proportions.php

As for titanium, that is what I looked at online to begin with. But, I was told by a jeweler that the metal is masculine looking, gets scratched up and can''t be buffed, and that it''s hard to find a reputable company that makes them. Do you disagree?

Thanks again.

We really need the crown and pavilion percents to be able to give you any meaningful advice about this diamond, so post them when you can please! The depth may not be an issue, the crown and pavilion will tell us more, no need to worry.

if you have a question about proportions, Pricescope is the ultimate diamond info source.

extreme shallowness will cause the diamond to look dark, but as said, we need crown and pav angles to be sure.

you can polish titanium, no problem. Bruce Boone is the guy that PSers go to for their titanium tension settings.

Tension settings are very neat looking, but few people have fingers which do not fluctuate in size. True tension rings are difficult to impossible to size and generally only the manufacturer will tackle such a request.

There are slightly less sophisticated designs which look like tension rings, but connect under the diamond allowing for some changes in size to be much less problematic.

I have a blue diamond tension set in titanium as a RHR. I have a really hard time seeing it as masculine. I think the design makes a ring more masculine or feminine, not the metal itself. I really like the darker look of titanium, specially in a matte/brushed finish.

I don''t understand why a jeweller would say that titanium can''t be buffed/refinished. I''ve done this on ordinary equipment, with no problem.
