Hi my dear PS fellow!

As I am getting ready to move to a new apartment I am also shopping for a comfortable mattress. Do any of you have Tempurpedic mattress set or comparable memory foam mattress? I often get back pain and am contemplating switching to memory foam bed from the regular spring mattress. Any input and suggestion will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks~!

Memory foam gets HOT when you sleep. I would consider how you sleep then look into the right material for you. Latex foam mattresses have a similar feel but don''t sleep hot.

I''ve had my temp[urpedic mattress for 8 years and will never sleep on anything else again. Not only did it greatly improve problems I''ve had with insomnia, but it also miraculously "cured" chronic bursitis in my shoulder that I previously had physical therapy and cortisone shots for, except the new mattress did a world more good than the medical treatments.
That said, my husband likes a firm mattress, and for some reason, doesn''t like the tempurpedic. However, he''s the first person I''ve ever known who''s not a fan of it. Plus, he went to military school where he slept on cots for 4 years, so I think that''s where he developed his awful taste in mattresses ;-)

I don''t have a tempurpedic, but they seem to be a love-''em or hate-''em type of thing. Some people think they feel like wet sand. For me, their response time is a bit slow; I move around a lot and the mattress is too slow to move with me. We went with latex, which, like tempurpedic, avoids problems with springs, but I think it has advantages over tempurpedic. We love our latex mattress. Plus we were able to choose various softness/firmness levels, and different ones for DH and me. His side of the bed is harder. (The brand is called Flobed.) Latex are supposed to be the longest lasting matresses, plus I think I heard that when tempurpedic was developed, they were trying to mimic the properties of latex. I like latex because it gives but supports at the same time. Plus I love its longevity. Flobed has a 90-day trial period, during which time you can change out cores to change the firmness of the bed.

(BTW, if you are allergic to something like latex gloves, that doesn''t mean you''d be allergic to latex mattress.)

When I was looking, I was using this forum:

http://www.whatsthebest-mattress.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl?board=wtb-mattress

I found the site helpful.
Good luck!

I had an incredibly comfy King Koil queen size bed and I HATED to give it up when my FI (boyfriend at the time) and I moved in together. He wanted a temurpedic but we couldn''t afford the real ones. We actually got a king sized bed from a store in the northeast called Bob''s Discount Furniture (yes, the "Bob-o-pedic"). I hated that we went to a discunt furniture place but my FI really wanted one.

So now we''ve had this bed for a year and a half and it''s not bad. It''s still not as comfy as the bed I used to have though.

LOL. It sounds funny but if it works why not

Oh boy. This thread just made me spend the last half hour looking at a mattress forum and consumer reports! I am not sleeping well and have had a sore shoulder lately, and I NEED a new mattress. But I am hearing really good and really bad things about memory foam now that I explore it a little. I''m also hearing some good comments on latex, yet consumer reports doesn''t even really mention those! Not to mention I am not sure my husband and I will find one we both like!

We have tempur for the last 4- 5 years.Absolutely recommend this mattress. It takes a bit getting used to for some people at least 2 to 3 weeks. You never feel like anyone is in bed with you .Never feel any movements..
Its not a good idea to sit on it as it weakens the edges and can''t take your hot water bottle ( if you use one? ) to bed as the heat will make it softer.Other than that I can trully say its the best one we ever had.Great for people with back , shoulder , neck pain also.Don''t forget to get a pillow that goes with it.When we got ours they were brand new here and we were given an option to return it after 4 weeks if not happy with it.I don''t think one could get this now?? I recommened this matteress to so many people and when I see them they often say they sleep better because of my recommendation..I found no one complained as yet..

Hi SkippyGirl,

I read from the other posting that you have an original bed but you would have gotten a delux today? May I ask you why? I actually like firmer bed, and was thinking of going for the original. Could you talk more about the pros and cons of original bed versus classic, or delux models?

Thanks!!!

I love mine, seriously. I just tried out the plush top and liked that a little better, but if you like firm then you will like the original. I love it!!! Buy it from a reputable place because our first mattress we had issues with the store (sealy store). Then we bought the tempurpedic from a store that said we had 6 months to see if we liked it or we could trade of a Sterns and Foster, Spring Air, what ever else they had. Just my two cents. Hope that helps but the original is great; we have had it for 4 yrs I think. We are sleeping like babies; Best wishes.

We went mattress shopping today. I went before my husband to narrow down the selection a bit. Basically we looked at Tempur-pedic, the top 3 Sealy Posturpedics, and a nice latex set. I didn''t tell him the prices so it wouldn''t influence his thinking. He strongly favored the Tempur-pedics (he liked the latex one, too, but it was SO thick that I think it might be a problem)! We didn''t make a final decision today, though, as it was too close to closing time to finish up. They had 5 models and it was hard to decide which one! The Original was too firm for me, the next two were okay and about the same (Classic and Deluxe), the Rhapsody (a newer model) was very comfortable and has some of the new high density Tempur in it, and then the Celebrity was very comfortable, too.

Obviously it would be good to get the least expensive one that is adequately comfortable, but that is very hard to judge from lying on each one for a couple of minutes.

If any of you who already have these beds would like to share which model you have (aside from those who already have), I''d appreciate it!

We are still quite happy with our Tempur-pedic Celebrity model and we are glad we chose it.

When we bought ours they just had two versions one firmer and one softer.Sorry don''t know the name of the models. We got the more expensive one the firmer version. We tried both for few minutes in the store and to me personally the firmer one was far better. The firmer I believe has more tempur in it.Ours is 8" thiick.Good luck to you and I would go and try again both of them.Go with your husband so you both can get a feel for it with 2 people slepping and moving on it.Ideally you should not feel another person at all on it.Good luck to you..

Thanks, everybody! It would be easier to choose if there were only 2 models! I guess we''ll pick one of the middle ones!

Just try them. You should not feel that there is another person with you.Make them move and you should not be aware that there is another person. That is easy. After all years still the same feel...Keep us posted..

We both tried them yesterday. One was too hard, but the others were all fine. We could not feel the other move. It is amazing! Now if I can get my husband to stay on his side and not hog the middle, I''ll be a happy camper!

Just had my lunch and lunch literature happen to have article " Secrets of the mattress" It is in " Money Sense"( its Canadian )Anyways had to read it ,so I can pass on any other info.So it says that you must bargain as Mattress prices have largest mark up in the furniture business.
" I got the manager of a mattress shop to reduce the price of a queen size Tempur-Pedic mattress from $4500 to $ 2800 simply by asking" andIt goes like this
" In fact the closer I moved to the exit door of the store, the lower the price dropped" Says " never settle for the first offer"
I could be writing here for a long time, but I hope this bit should help you. When we bought ours we asked for the pillows and got them.( you want them) Tempur was new here and the prices were much ,much lower then because they just started to introduce them on the market and not many were available.
Tempur matteress is so comfy that one does not need to move and turn too much...Happy haggling to you...

This a topic that comes up often in my line of work so I''ve asked a lot of questions and dones some research myself on memory foam and latex. It does seem to be either "love it" or "hate it" when it comes to memory foam and that may be because it''s a closed cell technology. Meaning it retains heat where the sorce is. A big complaint is "too hot" or a "clamy" feeling. Latex which is open cell technology. That means that if you spill liquid it will evenutally seep through hitting the floor, it also lets heat escape. They both come in various firmnesses. Latex can be customized on either side to suit different needs as well if she likes it firm, and he likes it less firm.

We''ll be going with latex for our next mattress, a Jemison.

I got a ''SleepShaper'' mattress that is a cheaper version of Tempurpedic. Having had major back surgery - and spending a week on the hospital''s version (only in the spinal wards - but so comfy!) and still having ongoing problems with my spine, I tried loads of different sorts and actually prefer this to the Tempur ones.

It''s one of the best things I ever bought - I now hate staying in hotels!

Even better, I didn''t have to pay VAT (17.5% uk sales tax) as long as I gave them a copy of a doctor''s letter. Hooray!

That is very interesting about the discount issue, because our friend who owns the mattress store said Tempur-P is the only brand that they cannot discount. They said that is a strict policy of the company.

I haven''t heard of SleepShaper but will have to check that out. Thanks!

I was told the same about how Tempurpedic would not allow their retailers to give ANY discount. Maybe they just recently update the policy?

Well that is what I read about the discount. In any case no one really wants to tell you that they offer a big discount or do they? As for retaining heat I have heard about it , but have never been hot . Everyone I know who uses it never mentioned it either...

I doubt it. I imagine some retailers break the rules, but I wouldn''t expect my friends to do that.

I''ve just been looking online and see that many of the major mattress brands have memory foam and latex mattresses. It''s just about impossible to judge quality as compared with TP.

cnspotts, I saw Jamison mattresses online, if that was what you are meaning. A mattress store about 30 minutes from here carries those in latex and memory foam.

Zhuzhu, I have been reading a lot of mattress reviews tonight and I am seeing some things that indicate that Tempur-Pedic is not the only brand of memory foam mattress that is good. It says that some may be better. But I need to read further and I''ll come back and try to tell you what else I learn. I just don''t want to pay $3000 for a brand name if there are others that are equal or better. From what I am reading, the latex is worth considering as well as it lasts longer.

My physio - who is a specialist spinal physio at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital here in London reckons Tempur are doing well out of massive advertising but aren''t necessarily the best brand

Have you heard good things about them? I see they make memory foam and latex mattresses. I don''t mind paying for TP if it is the best, but if there are other brands that are as good or better, then I''d choose to pay less! (Thanks Pandora for your info!)

I''ve spent a good bit of time the last couple of days researching mattresses and it is VERY hard to get any kind of consensus on what brands or models are the best...except I was reading about all these elite matteresses in the $12,000 range. And I will tell you now, there is no way I''d spend $12,000 on a mattress!!!!!!

This is very true of our latex (Flobed) as well. In some ways, except for the mattress cover that holds it together and one thin layer, we are on separate beds, and it is very good about transfer of motion.
