I''m looking to surprise my g/f with an engagement ring. I''m sure she''ll be more than happy with the diamond. However, I''m betting she''d want to have a say on the setting once she sees it. So I''m curious about people''s experiences in general. Do your local jewelers'' allow you to get a stone set in a temporary setting for a small fee? How much would this fee and setting be (in your experience)? Could I sell this back to the jeweler after the fact?

Am I trying to do something that''s out of the ordinary?

Just the standard tiffany style setting I think is generally used for your intention. Many diamond dealers offer the ring for a nominal fee if you buy the diamond from them...I have seen around $75-$185. They come in white gold or yellow gold and usually have a white metal head/prongs. 4 prong, 6 prong...

So don''t worry about the mounting...make it all about the stone.

Of course, just my opinion.

Excellent, that''s what I was thinking. I definitely didn''t want to concentrate on the setting, but obviously need the setting for the initial presentation. I think I''ll go with that extra cash for the basic setting and then get it reset with the setting of my choice.

Anyone have an estimate on how much it costs to have a diamond reset? I''m guessing it''s fairly small if you buy the setting from a jeweler. Probably 1% of the stone itself, so it''s not so important. :)

If you buy the stone and setting from the same place, most jewelers will set the stone at no charge. I''d be surprised if they didn''t. If not, the fee is usually anywhere from $50 - $150 (depending on the size of the stone).
