My man Leon Mege...

Haven't gotten back to you since last week because when I have free time to search the web, my girlfriend is usually within earshot. Many thanks for the feedback. Today I am in the office and have some free time. So this is what I know so far:

My girl has always been partial to simple settings. She raves about Tiffany since I've known her and ANYTIME my boy's name comes up, since he proposed to his girl with a Tiffany ring. The ring he got her, its nice "sparkly" (as she says) and all that, I am not going to take that away, but the stone is smaller than I'd like. I think .87ct. I know my girl is hoping for something larger (1.5-1.7) but I'd like to try for 1.7-1.9+...2ct might be pushing it, after what you all told me last week. This all means that Tiffany is probably out of the question, which sux. The stone is something I am still searching for but the setting keeps changing. I told her to drop me hints and now I get an email that she likes this guy Leon's work. So this leads me to believe Tiffany is not that important to her. Is this a safe assumption? Ladies?

So what can you tell me about Leon? I work in NYC, so getting there isn't a problem. I want to surprise her but I need to know what she wants to get the ball rolling. If she weren't so particular about everything, this would be a breeze but, SHE IS. I am trying to propose by Mid-August. Am I losing it to think I can get a ring ordered and finished by then?

To reiterate: Budget is $12-16k (max)

My suggestion? Spend it all on the stone and have it set in a 6 prong tiffany type mounting for $300. Let HER pick out the final setting. She''ll be thrilled to have the proposal and sounds like the type to enjoy having a lot of input in the final look of the ring.

I would get the biggest stone possible and find out what setting she likes best from Leon. That is very sweet!

You might want to look for a stone in the $10-12,000 range so you''ll have enough money left over for one of those Leon masterpieces!

Leon plain solitaire = $2000 aprox.
Leon pave halo = $5500+

Unless she wants the plain solitaire you''ll be hard pressed to buy a 1.7 to 2.0 stone, and a pave setting from Leon. Lead time varies from 4 to 6 weeks.

You all are good, thanks! Now, what is halo? PurrfectPear? I don''t know much as you can see. She loves the tiffany setting. Simple with a nice stone. She wants to showcase the stone, she often says that and I agree, being that her style is more simple than extravagant. The Leon one she emailed me is simple too and to her is completely different from Tiffany but to be honest I don''t see how it is so different? I haven''t had a lot of time to research but will try in the next few days.

Have any of you been to see Leon Mege? Is his work worth the extra money? I checked out some Mark Morrell settings she sent me a few weeks ago but think I like Leon better. It just seems more like her.

Chiming in here -- I agree with purfectpear -- max your budget on the stone, simple setting and let her pick out it''s final home!

Interesting. The majority are saying to let her pick the setting. Do you think it will have the same effect when she sees it? She tends to change her mind a lot so maybe letting her take her time and choose what she wants is a good idea.

I agree with a temp setting and letting her choose, especially since you say she''s particular and indecisive (much like me).

I haven''t worked with Leon, but his work is amazing! BF and I were looking into Leon but decided against it only because of the distance and price.

I think the temp setting idea is great because you can propose with a great stone and work on the setting together. My BF let me have a considerable amount of input on the setting design, which I am thrilled with!

So, IMHO, letting her work with Leon might just be the way to go...
