My boyfriend was previously engaged and is now looking to somehow trade/sell the diamond he has so he can purchase mine. Any possibility this can be done? The ring is not certified, but we are going to get it appraised and thinking of sending it off for cert. Basically, we''re trying to get out of an old car and into a new one. Any tips would really help.

Does the place where the original diamond was purchased have a trade in policy? That is usually the easiest way to trade in an old diamond for a new one. I have done this with my local jeweler several times.

They do, but I''m worried about a price markup since it''s from a mall jeweler. We went there on Saturday and they tried to tell us that we could trade, but only if we made a purchase double the original purchase. I right away became guarded with them because I feel this is unethical and not standard practice.

that is normal practice for many trade-up policy''s. I believe even Tiffany''s has a double the ammount policy.

Sadly though, if you overpay for a not-great quality diamond at a mall store, you''re better off not trading in. What would be nice is if they''d let you simply trade the diamond for some earrings or something. You''ll be better off getting your diamond from one of these online vendors for sure.
