I'm trying to educate myself on clarity grading.

In this topic, the OP has a stone that was graded SI and was told that the price should have been lower for an SI with external naturals than an SI of the same type with only internal inclusions.

I don't really understand how clarity assignments work, but that just sounded odd to me. Can someone enlighten me? I guess I figured cut quality would play a more important role once clarity grade was assigned in the final pricing of a stone.

The people who could best answer this are in Vegas right now or just returning from Vegas.

My answer is that it depends, many diamonds these days are bought on paper and a grade is a grade, on the other hand some inclusions will cause experts to try and negotiate a better price or pass on the stone.

GIA EX cut grade vs a VG cut grade would certainly make a bigger difference on price than a borderline vs GIA si1 vs a Weak GIA si1.

Thanks Karl. That makes sense.
