I have two tattoos one of something kinda random but still significant to me on my lower left hip and a more elaborate tattoo over my ribs. Very painful but totally worth it. Just a word of caution about your tattoo however, i would make sure the person doing the tattoo knows Chinese characters or the character under your lotus will end up looking a little off.

And just for fun, i LOVE these science tattoo

Oh! I have a lotus on the front of my ankle... It''s my favorite out of all of my tattoos. Here''s a quick pic... (Not the best angle, and please don''t mind the hairy legs!!

Aw, it's lovely Tuckins!

I'm still trying to decide when to time the tattoo.. Right after my honeymoon? Haha. Hmm...maybe I'll get it done next December, to celebrate the end of my basic science years, and beginning of my clinical education at med school. But winter = big ol sweaters for me, and I kind of wanted to appreciate my tattoo more when I first get it...hmmm..

I really like your design, MTG.

When are you getting married?

MTG- I think it''s too funny that you are so into tattoos. Who knew!

I think your design is really lovely, though. Still, as a doc, I would be careful of putting it where anyone might catch a glimpse. You know how medicine is

Haha, yeah, I'm a huge punk-rocker at heart. It's funny, I know so many of my classmates who have tattoos, and my class in general has a strong liberal leaning. It's mostly the old guard (i.e.professors, etc, the people who control our lives) who would be the ones that would be put off by tattoos. As far as the students go though, many more of us have tattoos than one might think, and we're an old stogy ivy league school no less! Haha. I also have classmates with nose and eyebrow piercings who wear them on a daily basis. It's just funny how polarized it is, that the old guard of medicine is seen as a stogy, white haired conservative bunch, while us students are the pretty liberal, nonjudgement, worldly types. And of the nurses/techs I've worked with, most of them actually had visible tattoos, lol.

Yeah, I debate between forearm near the wrist or near the elbow. Either way, you'd be able to see it when I'm in scrubs, but at least I can hide it for interviews. And if I'm seeing patients in a white coat, you can't see it either. And it'll be pretty small, maybe 1.5" by 1.5", hopefully it won't get me into too much trouble.

Also, I think the fact that the rest of me is a small, petite, smilely asian girl might balance out the "scary" tattoo perception. I'm hoping anyways.

This August 1!! Less than 2 months, I'm trying to not freak out, lol.

I'm thinking of going to Sacred Tattoo in NYC to get it done. If anybody knows anything about them/had one done there, I'd appreciate any insight!

I have four, all pretty big.

I''m in the process of getting two lasered off. It SUCKS. I wish I hadn''t started.

Originally I started the laser procedure because I wanted to expand the designs on those two tattoos and the current designs needed to be lightened before I could do that. It wasn''t that I didn''t like the old designs, I just wanted something bigger in the same locations, since I''d had the old tattoos there for a while (~7-8 years).

It turns out that laser removal is a total PITA. I''m okay with that. I am less okay with having two big half-faded tattoos that look horrible. They looked fine before I started and hopefully they will look fine when I''m done, but this transition period is incredibly annoying and it''s going to take over a year before I''m done. GRAA.

Honestly it''s not that bad, but I do wish I''d been content to just keep the old designs. Oh well. Let this be a word of warning to anyone else contemplating laser removal: it is no fun at all, it costs a ton, and it takes forever.

That''s the other part of inifitink that I like. I like the idea that it might be easier to "alter", so that the tattoo can grow with you. I don''t think I''ll expand on my tattoo (mostly because of the field I"m in), but the idea does appeal to me, lol.

Pretty lotus Tuckins!

MTG, you could always put yours in a different spot, and then even with scrubs on it won''t be visible. Ribs or back of shoulder maybe?

I thought about that, but I really want it somewhere that I see whenever I want to (which rules out the back and ribs, haha, unless I decide to flash the room). The design is something that grounds me and reminds me of who I think I am, so I''d like to be able to see it and be reminded of all that when times get stressful.

Believe me, I''ve thought of many different places I could possible put it, and it''s come down to the inside of my left forearm...so now I just need to narrow it down just a liiiitttle more, and I''ll be set!

Very cute, Tuckins!

Oh I LOVE tattoos, I''m pretty covered actually, lucky for me my SO likes them and my job allows them.
I''m working on one full sleeve then I''m going to start the other.. I have them all over.

I have no experience with the new ink, haven''t really heard of it till now. The biggest thing is make sure its safe. So many things have come out that sound cool, or go away and they haven''t been safe so if its a new ink I would wait awhile to see how people react to it.

here is one side of my "work in progress" I have a lotus on my wrist and a scene of a girl reading books by candle light up my arm, with moths and stuff
i LOVE it. sorry if the pick is big

Well, it''s actually the 1st (and only) FDA approved ink, and while I know the FDA doesn''t exactly always have a spotless record, at least it went through the process. Most tattoo inks don''t (which I was always amazed at), I don''t think tattoo inks are particularly regulated, but correct me if I''m wrong.

And I LOVE your tattoos! I''m a big lotus fan (obviously), and I think sleeves are just gorgeous. If I was in a different field (and assuming I had the pain tolerance), I''d probably get one.

Thanks Tuckins!

ckrickett-that is AWESOME-I love it! I love when women have sleeves like that-tho I think I personally would look like a dork, I''m jealous when I''ve seen women able to pull it off. And men w/sleeves or just generally covered like that..gives me palpitations! I like to watch the tattoo shows-not just for the tattoos themselves but to sigh over the hotness of the guys! (Ami James makes me swoon)

I have three:

1. Two flowers on my right hip, which I got on my 18th birthday. (My Mom went with me and got a little rosebud on her left hip! LOL!)

2. A butterfly on my left shoulder blade.

3. A ring of four-leaf clovers around my right ankle.

The first one hardly hurt at all, the second one hurt a bit more, and the third one HUUUUUURT!!! I love them all, and I want another one!
9.gif

Go for it! I''m not sure about the new ink thing, but seriously, life is short.

I have my anniversary in roman numerals on the inside of my forearm right below the crook of my elbow. It''s really beautiful and I always joke that I put enough room to have "worst mistake ever!" if I get a divorce. I usually throw that one out when DH and I are bickering and it makes us both laugh. We''re strange.

Life is too short to worry about what other people think, or to never do something you know you want to do just because it might not be the same when you''re old. NO part of your body will be the same when you''re 80, so who cares if your tattoo looks weird?
1.gif

I have two tattoos, a stylized dragon on my left shoulderblade and a half-sun on either side of my cleavage. I love them, and the only one that is ever really visible is the one on my chest, but it''s easily covered up. My husband thinks its super sexy, too. I have plans to get a phoenix in the next year, but I am having a really hard time finding someone to help me draw it - I guess it''s really hard, I don''t know. I want the phoenix to look like this and the tail feathers of it to be like peacock feathers kind of (sorry, mods, I forgot about the flick-r rule). Stupid picture is too big and I just can''t bring myself to open photoshop, so it will have to be later. I''ve wanted it for over a year so I know it will be good
9.gif

Hey MonkiePie, the phoenix sounds awesome! I would try to help you draw it (free of course), but I don''t think we''re allowed to exchange emails and it''s be silly to have a thread of just the two of us

ARG, wish PS had a Private mssg system :/

I know! Times like this really make me wish for PMs, too. Oh well, it''s ok. My husband is going to give it a shot now that he has some time away from work.

If you do decide to get your tattoo, I would love to see it!

i love your sleeveish tattoo! All this talk about tattoos has me itching to get more, they are so addictive. I think i''m going to add to the one on my ribs...

i love tattoos as well and it took me a long time to finally get one. i had always wanted the flower i was named after in Vietnamese, however not a lot of people could translate it into English for me. about 6 months before my birthday i started researching the flower and after i found out what it actually was, it took another couple of months to decide how i wanted it designed. i can be a bit indecisive, so i felt like choosing the design of the tattoo was more of a pain than actually getting it tattooed on. i mean what if i liked another design better than the one i chose?
38.gif
anyway, a few weeks before my birthday, i went to a reputable artist who took the time to help me with the overall layout, color and location. fast forward a couple of days after my birthday, i had a brand spanking new tattoo! i've only had it for a little less than a year but i absolutely love it and i want more...they really are addictive!

MTG, i'm glad that you're taking your time in deciding what design you want (which i love btw! i'm thinking of a lotus for my 2nd myself!) and that you're being smart about going to a reputable artist and tattoo parlor. i think i may of heard of this new ink and i agree that more options shouldn't be a bad thing. however like sunnyd said, i just hope this new ink doesn't give people the idea that tattoos are expendable. as far as location, i say wherever you're most comfortable with. i think a good artist can help you decide where a tattoo would look best given the design/size and shape/curves of your body. you said that you're not too worried about the pain, and you shouldn't be. obviously yes, it does hurt but it all depends on how high your tolerance for pain is. if tattoos didn't hurt, it wouldn't have that "cool" factor and besides, it's totally worth it in the end. let us know and share pics when you get one!
31.gif

here's a pic of mine a couple of hours after i got it done (it looks red around the edges). it's a Multiflora rose with a Chinese seal stamp of my last name. it's kind of fitting since my mom is Vietnamese and my dad is Chinese and it represents my full name. my mom loves these roses, which are abundant in Vietnam, and they only bloom in the summertime (August is my birth month). however during my research, i found out that the US classifies these flowers as an invasive species due to their ability to "crowd out" other native botanical species. haha!

that is lovely VIP0802, and I love the meaning behind it too!

It''s gorgeous VIP! May I ask where that is on you? Shoulder?

Such a pretty flower VIP! Great meaning to it too!

I did not get mine done at Sacred Tattoo in NYC, but I wish I did. When I went to visit, they were very professional. I had mine done in the shop where I worked instead. Very pretty design btw. =)

thanks ckrickett and packrat! i forgot to mention earlier that i adore both of your tattoos as well! i especially love all the colors!

MakingTheGrade - thanks! the tattoo is on my lower back. at first i wanted it behind my neck so it would''ve been a lot smaller. after my tattoo artist and i talked it over, i wanted to be able to see more detail of the flower and stamp which is why i changed it in the end. there have been a few people who asked why i chose that location since it''s a "tramp stamp", but i happen to like it there. it''s easily covered yet i could still show it off a little too.
