Only in Australia!
A 50 year old guy at his local supermarket was angry that there was no toilet paper on the shelves. All gone. Corona virus has seen people stockpiling huge quantities of toilet paper. So he starts to verbally abuse a young female staff member until another customer stepped in and told him to watch his language and his attitude.
50 year old guy responds by putting intervening customers head into a head lock until another customer manages to break them up. Meanwhile store manager has called the Police so 50 year old guy leaves.
Police arrive and find him two shops down the street and tell him they want to speak to him. His response is to try and punch the Police officer and then he lunges for the policeman’s gun. He is tasered and put in the Paddy wagon and taken away.
All over a few rolls of toilet paper ....... and no one has explained why of all the things you might need when like if the world is ending.... why stockpile toilet paper!

Oh my. I just don't get it. Why????? I work in a hospital and overnight our stores of toilet paper and hand sanitiser were pilfered, and there's barely anything left. It baffles me

THIS! Could someone explain to me? Where in the world You need TP as long as water is running...

One theory is it takes up so much room on the shelves that when you take them off shelves it is noticeable. People take notice, oh everyone is buying TP and Paper Towels and they have a herd mentality about it and start stockpiling TP and paper towels... because they think everyone else is. FOMO.

Just one theory.

I think Ark or someone else mentioned that water is scarce in Australia so TP is a must.

I wonder what the panic is here in the USA however...as far as I know our water supply is OK.

I think much of it (in the USA at least) has to do with perception vs reality. As of now at least.

Of course we cannot predict the future. I think the first priority should be stocking up on one's necessary meds and having a 3 week supply of food etc. And then hoping for the best because no one knows with certainty how this will play out.

What I do know is we must all remain civil or all heck will break out worse than it already is. And that does no one any good.

@missy here there's no water concerns. California always has water concerns it seems. People are panic buying for the apocolypse is the problem. Which means they're gonna act out. Keeps the news cycle interesting.

I sure could do with a little less interesting these days and a whole lot more boring and peaceful if you kwim. #fullshareofinteresting #longingforboring

We haven't had a single case where I live (and we are far, far away from where any cases have occurred, and even then, we haven't had a single fatality here from it, which is far more than I can say for the regular flu), and people are still stockpiling stuff. I heard that Costco on the weekend was insane. It was so bad our provincial minister of health went on the news to tell people that while buying a little bit extra food, water, and supplies was fine (like maybe enough to last you a week or two), to please not go out and stock up on years worth of stuff that you'll never end up using. And especially not to buy up all the hand sanitizer and face masks and other supplies that our health care workers need for their day to day jobs, let alone what they would need in case of pandemic. So I think the media owns a lot of the hysteria that is happening.

I wonder if there will be TP next time I need it. We always buy the costco stuff, so I'm used to not even thinking about it really. We have zero room to store anything, no hoarding for us. People are crazy!

I am a food vendor and I go into 4-6 grocery stores everyday.
Hand sanitizer is no where to be found. Canned soup, canned vegetables, beans, rice, oatmeal all seeing major depletions.
I think people are worried that they might have to hole up in their homes for a while. And if that's the case, then stores may close. It's a far fetched scenario, but people are like lemmings.
Another thing I'm seeing is far less checkouts with cashiers, forcing people to use self checkouts. Hmmmmm....

We went food shopping today, and apart from there being no hand sanitiser, everything else was available.

The problem with people stock piling in case of shortages, then becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

I had read that if there is an outbreak in a particular area, then people likely won't want to be hanging around in long lines in the grocery store, so I have picked up additional food (cereal, rice, beans.) We made our own hand sanitizer since sold out here -- rubbing alcohol and aloe vera gel. I suppose just rubbing alcohol would work in a pinch!

Someone made mention on the bathandbodyworks reddit that their store still has Pocketbacs For those near a mall, you could certainly try there.

BTW its 90 degrees here, which I belive is some sort of record. I went out with the dog (backyard only) and thought I was going to melt.

No issues here! Looks we are keeping calm!

Calm here, too. I haven't seen anyone with a face mask, and there was plenty of TP at the local stores I use including Walmart.

And I’m waiting for the eBay listings....
1 roll Toilet paper, rare double thickness and soft. Bidding starts at $9.99 - bid early, bid often. Don’t miss out!

Timely thread.

I go to my So. California Costco maybe once a week.
I buy TP maybe once a month.

We're getting low so I looked for it last night.
There was a long line at the back of Costco where they keep the TP, PT and water.
Cart after cart going the other way was chock full of bottled water.
When it was my turn I couldn't find the TP and asked a worker if they had moved it.
He just laughed.

They open at 10.
TP was already sold out today when I called at 11.
They said to get any you have to get in line an hour or two before opening.

:angryfire:

But once again I'm sure glad I have a reverse osmosis water filter at my kitchen sink.
No bottled water to buy, eveah!.

Rather than Ebay I'm sure we will see some ridiculousness on Amazon, for resellers wanting to make a buck. masks, TP, hand sanitizer, you name it all going for ridiculous prices too.

An aside, as I entered Costco yesterday an employee wiped my cart's handle with a fresh anti-bacterial wipe.
I thought that was a nice touch.

I love Costco ... except for those F-ing traffic-jam-cauising free sample stands. :angryfire:

HI:

One can't eat TP. No urgency to get tasered.

cheers--Sharon

We saw a factory in full 24 hour production

What do you think all the water is for ?
Are the powers at be turning the tap off ?
Don't we already have water in our earthquake kits ?

Maybe it's a stupid question, but what does TP have to do with Corona Virus? Do you get a case of the screaming Sh!ts with it?

Perhaps it's preparation for being quarantined in one's home for weeks, unable to buy anything.
