Hello All,

I proposed to my fiance about a month ago - I purchased a 2 carat cushion cut ring set in platinum w/ tapered baguettes. About a week after we got engaged, my fiance noticed that the tapered baguettes were not lined up in the setting correctly. One was lined up higher on the setting than the other...in turn, this made the center stone look off balance. We have brought the ring back to the jeweler twice, we explained that we want the ring to be perfectly symmetrical and lined up so that the tapered baguettes look the EXACT same on each side (same level, depth, etc.) but the jeweler cannot get it right. They claim that the baguettes are the exact same (although I am skeptical). As a side note, I had the ring appraised after my purchase and the appraiser said that the baguettes were similar but couldn''t 100% verify as the baguettes were set in the platinum.

Long story short, the jeweler has agreed to replace the setting. However, I am doubtful that they will get it how we want it based on previous experience. My question to all of you - are my expectations too high? I spent a lot of $$ on this ring and I want it to be perfect for my fiance. After all, she deserves the absolute best. We''re both stressed over this. If the jeweler cannot get it right, I need to think of an alternative plan. I can''t spend any more money on the ring as finances are very thin right now. All suggestions would be extremely appreciated. Also, if anyone can recommend a jeweler in NYC who might be able to assist I would be grateful.

Thank you!!

Do you have any pictures you can post to demonstrate? I think it would help form a better response.

They should be even, but we need a pic to see. If it''s obviously uneven without a loupe, then it should be reset.

Sorry you had these problems NY123

Although it might seem like there's some machine to get everything perfect, a lot of the finishing of a ring is done by eye.

Baguettes in particular can be quite difficult to get perfect.
Well, actually NO ring is "perfect"...
But to get it good enough so that the eye does not notice any problems is tough.
Still as Vespagirl mentioned, you deserve a ring that looks good to your eye...... and it can be done.

It could very well be that the baguettes are a poor match.
Or, it's even possible your center is not perfectly symmetrical.

I hope the new setting achieves the goal- please keep us informed!

Thank you for the responses. Unfortunately, I''m getting an error when I try to upload a picture. If anyone wants me to email them directly, I can do so.

We cannot email or PM on this site. You can send the pics to admin and they will post them for you, if you are having trouble resizing them. Try what Ellen suggested first

#2 . It's difficult to gauge from these pictures (these were taken during the appraisal). If I bring the ring to another jeweler (one that is more reliable), I'm wondering what the cost might be to have the setting replaced with another setting of equal or lesser cost. I'm also thinking that the baguettes are matched up poorly...in which case, a new setting probably won't make much of a difference. Are there any NY-based jewelers that might be able to provide some insight?

It''s very difficult to tell from a photo- but if I had to guess, it looks like the center is not set exactly straight. This will make the whole ring look cock-eyed.

It''s also difficult to see the stone very well- although I can see it''s a cushion. Does it have a GIA report? If so we can have a look at the Symmetry grade which might give us a little insight.

It is GIA certified (see image).

Based on that, the irregularity I see in the photo is likely just the angle to the camera.....

This is a tough one...it sounds as though the vendor is working with you on this though.
If you can get satisfaction that way, it would be best.
