Does anyone else feel creeped out when around people all wearing masks?
I will admit it creeps me out.

Not really creeped out, but I find I don't make eye contact. It's weird.

Frankly I'm creeped out when someone at the food store is not wearing a mask, or have it pulled down so their nose and/or mouth are exposed.

HI:

Admitting that wearing protective equipment to outside engagements is odd; I am accustomed to using it professionally. Its a balance.

cheers--Sharon

Yes, it creeps me out too, and I typically don't make much eye contact with strangers anyway. What has concerned me is that if mask wearing becomes the norm, I think crimes will go up with little ability to identify suspects. And I just heard of the first two cases of that in the past week....

It doesn’t creep me out but I feel like I am suffocating and need to get out of the store asap.

@AprilBaby - have you tried a silk or cotton mask? I find that they're a bit more tolerable and for some reason don't fog up my sunglasses!

I can't breathe in one either. And my glasses fog. It's a mess.

I do feel it would be relatively easy to commit a crime with a mask that covers your entire lower face, along with sunglasses and a hat though!

ETA: random Google photo. I guess you could describe skin tone and hair if you can see it to explain? I wouldn't envy having to pick from a line up though in these circumstances. I don't think you fairly could.

I'm creeped out by wearing them. People where I live go out of their way to make eye contact and give eye smiles in recognition that we're all in this together.

No, I smile (with my eyes ) and say hello. Most people around here do that.

I don't see that in our area. People avoid eye contact at a lot of the stores here, which wasn't like that before. A few weeks ago, when we found toilet paper, a lady was yelling at me at the checkout because we had one package of four rolls and the store ran out. I would have given it to her. But not after she yelled at me for no reason.

My parents got yelled at while at the grocery store recently by another patron when they were probably 10 feet from the person, with the complaint of being too close. I think people are stressed out and snapping.

It is just an unnatural way to go about life. I appreciate the fact that it helps keep us all safe and is certainly worth it at this point. I find people not making much eye contact either; I think the mask makes you aware that we are supposed to avoid one another. Someone said excuse me through their mask at the grocery store and I smiled and said no problem. I realized that they probably couldn't see that I was smiling though! Strange times call for strange things but it does creep me out. I feel like a bank robber wearing these masks!

I’m not creeped out as much as sad...and in disbelief. I miss human connections.

I truly hope I don’t have to teach in one when we go back to school. I feel like I am suffocating in them too.

That's very unfortunate. I'm in NY and I think most of us are in solidarity with each other.

Not creeped out, but having difficulty of breathing and you can't really understand someone when they talk.

I’m more creeped out when I see people not wearing masks. I feel safer wearing them. It’s sad that this is our new reality but I’m for anything that will help keep people safe.

Are you feeling any better today @Karl_K ?

I'm with @kenny - I'm creeped out when I don't see them. Which, around here, is all the time. Everywhere. Always.

I'm literally the one and only person in my area that has worn one except for two of the three people that were the "skeleton staff" at the dentist office last week. (Because, you know, I'm the one that breaks a tooth during a pandemic. While sneezing.) I didn't go in any stores, but out of curiosity while I was out, I drove by some of our regular stores and checked out the people going in and out. Not a single.solitary.mask.

Groups of people working outside doing construction, landscaping, etc. Not a single mask. No social distancing.

No one in my town wears a mask but me. They're all out walking in big groups, no masks, no social distancing. My neighbors are in and out all day long. No masks. Folks are having groups of people over all the time. No masks. No social distancing. It's been this way the whole time.

This. 100% this.

So many are wearing masks not covering their noses. WTH. Who are they fooling?

And for those who aren't wearing masks or wearing them wrong- they are selfish A**holes IMO.
And that is too mild a word for them but I will just think what I won't write and you can fill in the blanks.

@OboeGal what is wrong with (some) people? Would you mind sharing the area in which you live even if you just name the state? NYers near us are for the most part wearing masks. Not all but I would say close to 75-80% in our area. But I can only speak for our area of Brooklyn which is diversely populated so perhaps it can be extrapolated to other neighborhoods in Brooklyn. But at the Jersey Shore 90% are NOT wearing masks. SMH. Driving my DH crazy as I keep whinging about the people who aren't wearing masks.

Mainly I am frustrated with our Governors who must have the power to definitively state (vs strongly recommend) one must wear masks. OK they don't have the manpower to enforce it but at least make it an order.

Yes but it is better to have trouble understanding someone who is speaking through a mask than having trouble surviving because you catch Coronavirus. I have trouble breathing easily through any of the masks I have worn because I have asthma and a reduced lung capacity. But still I suck it up (literally and figuratively) and wear them and if I need to I go home to remove it and then I stay home.

And if you cannot wear a mask comfortably then just wear it while shopping and stay home otherwise or go to an area that has no other people to take your daily walk/exercise. Otherwise it is just plain selfish behavior IMO.

Wearing masks can and will save lives. It's not so hard to do. Wear a mask or stay inside. If you live in an area where you will pass other people and in an area that is hard hit with Covid 19.

At first it made me sad to interact wearing masks, but now it’s the norm.
My situation is a bit amusing. I am hard of hearing in a country where I don’t speak the language very well. Really, masks don’t help lol

But I make sure to make eye contact, with smiling, with everyone I meet, and say hello, how are you and thank you, even if they look grouchy.
Everyone is having a hard time, so I try to be part of what makes the day better. I need that connection to survive, so it’s totally self serving.

I spent a lot of my time growing up in Beijing so masks don’t weird me out cause it’s a lot more common there. People wear them year round on days when the pollution is really bad and for some it’s sort of a fashion statement too.

It’s quickly driving home just how much I need a hearing aid, and rely on lip reading.

In my town it has become a political affiliation marker:/ It's dividing houses around here. This town is one of the reddish dots in a sea of blue county. We have a majority more aged population. Most of my tiny town insists on being defiant. There is a lot of hoax/it's overblown talk! STILL!
It's scary for us.
One local corner store almost no one does- ever- not even the people inside. It's always packed. The other up the street has masks and bleach spray at the ready and limits of four customers at a time. If I need some gas, I go up the street.
Most people in the surrounding areas wear them religiously and practice appropriate hygiene. We will continue to do so, as well.

Nop. I freaked out when I see non-masked people around me or people do this...

Per the meme thread...

or

so um... if some would not get arrested they so WOULD wear their underwear like this!

I would wear a mask occasionally anyway when the airborne allergens were being absolutely nuts, so I'm not freaked out by it (though I now don't look like the crazy person, a plus!)

I smile more though no one can see it. Maybe thats why I smile more....lol

I wear a mask whenever I will be around people - so generally just the grocery and liquor store. I got ID'd at the liquor store one time trying to buy stuff with a mask on  I hadn't even thought kids may try to sneak in using masks!

YES! Masks also mean lack of conversation. And in the grocery store, it use to be families shopping. Parents with kids, couples etc. Now I find it is mostly people shopping alone.

I miss shopping with my teenagers. I shop alone now.

As I was on my weekly grocery store trip yesterday, I kept thinking of Hulu's Handmaids Tale, the scenes in DC. Everyone muzzled by their masks, shopping quickly to get out of the store. Avoiding eye contact, fear and distrust in the air. Worried eyes. Occasional eye contact. Even if someone smiles at you, it is very difficult to tell. The grocery store just seems so surreal now. It is a bit creepy.

I agree that it is upsetting to see people not wearing them. I do think they are necessary and thankfully most people wear them where I am.

Yesterday I had my gutters cleaned. My handyman is hearing impaired and depends on reading lips. It make me realize how difficult it must be for those who are hearing impaired and depend on reading lips.
