Hey all-

First time poster here. I bought an engagement ring a few weeks ago and just yesterday received the lab report listing the table space, depth percentage, angles, etc. This information was not provided to me at the time of purchase - only the color, clarity, carats, and cut were provided. As the center stone is an oval diamond, GIA did not provide an official cut grade for it. Instead, the cut was graded in-house by the vendor as "excellent." Figuring the cut grade to be trustworthy, I made the purchase.

Now that I see the lab report, I have some buyer's remorse. My qualm is with the table space of the diamond, which is listed as 63. This apparently is on the high-end for what the table space should be for an oval diamond, and I don't know how it could be graded "excellent" with that number. Here are the rest of the specs:

Depth % - 62.4
Table size % - 63
Crown height % - 12.9
Crown angle - 34.7 deg
Pavillion Depth % - 44.6
Pavillion angle - 41.9%
Girdle thickness - medium to slight thick

The diamond looks "fine" to me; however, I know it could look better with a smaller table. I am still within the return period and I'm wondering if I should make an exchange. The problem is that I was planning to propose soon. Thoughts?

Unfortunately, numbers do tell anything about the cut of the oval and you are correct that no lab currently provides any cut grading. How prominent is the bowtie? How does sparkle under various lights at home and the office? Can you post a picture (or several) of the oval diamond?

Here are a few pics. It sparkles everywhere, the concern for me is whether it could sparkle even more if it were the right dimensions. There is a slight bowtie like any other oval, but it's not prominent and you have to look at it a certain way to see it. Also, these pics were taken with an iPhone so they aren't best quality.

bump. any thoughts?

Ovals are very hard (esp since I am an EC lover) but when I was UCLABelle years and years ago on Pricescope I had a GIA Oval, and yours is VERY pretty, MUCH prettier than mine... the specs are good, and as long as you find it well-cut aka "sparkly" then she will too....

Also, the bowtie to me is very, very slight. BUT if it bothers you, then tell the jeweler the specs came back different and you are unsatisfied...you should be happy 100% with such a big purchase.

I think it looks pretty nice from your pictures. With fancy cuts the numbers usually take a back seat compared to how the
stone looks and how it preforms in different lighting. Aset images are also helpful to an extent.

I think if you thought it performed well before you knew of the table size then you should stick with it. Nice ovals are hard to
find and yours looks like one of the nicer ones.

Any straight down pictures? All those posted are at an angle and blurry, and those that aren't are too small or far away to make anything out.

Thanks to everyone who has responded so far! Much appreciated. In response to the post above, here is the closest pic I could get looking straight down without it being blurry.

Thanks. I'll probably hold off on doing the ASET scope unless and until she finds the specs to be a problem. I have a feeling that I'm making a bigger deal out of this than she will.
