I’m on assignment 7 of the Diamonds and Diamond Grading course, and I tell you there’s a ton of information packed into this. Maybe it’s because I haven’t worked in the trade, and so I am unfamiliar with much of this material.

I completed Diamond Essentials in a day. That really was a breeze. (My fancy certificate arrived yesterday!) This second course is nothing like DE. Each assignment for D&DG is close to a full day for me. (I have been able to complete two in one day but only once so far.) There is just so much information but it is very interesting and easy to follow. It’s broken down into text, slideshows, animated slides, and videos.

Just thought I’d post an update for anyone that’s curious. :mrgreen2:

Awesome :))

I'm sure you'll do just fine - PS must set you in good stead! :D

Will you be going to the GIA symposium?

No symposium in October. That’s right at the time of my anniversary and my sons birthdays. (All three fall within 10 days.)

Being a PSer has definitely been helpful. I had very basic knowledge before starting the classes. (Shoot, I had more knowledge than three of the salespeople in one of our local jewelry stores. They hadn’t heard of “hearts and arrows” or Idealscope/ASET imaging.) So I am learning more in depth of things I read about here. Plus I am learning how the industry formed, the role De Beers played and continues to play, how mining started and what the processes entail, what parts of the world are diamonds found, where they are processed, and so much more. I’m currently learning all about diamond crystals and how natural shape contributes to cutting plans.

I am curious. I’m thinking of starting classes this year

Glad it is going well for you - congrats!

Hang in there!

You are doing fine, it took me 3 years to complete the 5 courses back then when I had a full time job. It was all book learning, diamond grading, and Gem Identification via mailing stones back and forth. Your courses look so much better. Proctored exams were via Scantron forms, lol.

There was a comprehensive final covering all five courses to earn a Gemologist (GIA) Diploma. To get my GG, I would have to take the 3 lab classes but not retake the final. Not worth it to me during retirement.

Have fun.

This is so interesting and I look forward to your posts as you progress! :appl:

You guys are all so awesome! Thank you so much for your support and encouragement! Honestly. I really mean that. So far it has been pretty smooth sailing, until this current assignment. It's all about light and angles and while I get it, there is a LOT to "get". I feel like I am going to have to go back through the entire lesson again before I attempt the test. But I WILL make it through it. I know I can do it. I just have to focus a little more on this one and try to get all of these concepts down. :read:

This is when it sucks being "old" and having been out of school long enough to have forgotten much more than I remember. LOL!

Whew! I only missed one. No need to retake. Eight out of 20 assignments completed in this course. Almost halfway there.

I have been trying to network locally in hopes that as I get closer to finishing, I might have either some people I can go to for insight or leads for employment. One of the people I spoke with said he did everything except take his final for his GG, and that this is all a waste of my time and money. He said that I won't know how to actually grade or appraise things and that it doesn't make sense for me to have a GG just to get hired as a salesperson (because that's all I would be considered for once I am done). I hope he is wrong. It really took the wind out of my sails for sure. And it scared me a bit, since this costs quite a bit now for the GG.

Maybe I need to look into this more before I go any further? What do you think?
