So many variables!!

Been watching the great videos from good old gold.

I want to get a 1ct stone but as good a cut as possible, basically the sparkliest stone I can get within budget.

So far I haven''t noticed much different in colours so anything up to a G-H would be fine.
Clarity SI2 would be fine to keep cost down as long as the blemishes are not very obvious by eye.

My budget is around US$6000

I just need to work out how much extra it will cost ordering from the usa and getting it through UK customs with all the taxes etc.

Are the 'A Cut Above' rings the ones to go for?

My SO is a UK ring size K which seems to translate to US size 6 ?

Did a Blue Nile UK search and found something for you.

VAT is at 17.5%. And the present exchange rate is about 6000USD to 4000GBP.

Found some AGS stones on BN the you might be interested in pursuing.

1.04c H VS2, $3939 b4 VAT

1.14c H SI1, $3443 b4 VAT

Both are AGS0 for optical performance but the 1.14c is dinged for having just an excellent polish instead of ideal.

BN UK also have the ring size in UK sizes so should simplify your buying process.

You don't have to have a branded A Cut Above hearts and arrows to get a lovely stone! A diamond with proven proportions and excellent finish can also be a great choice if you are not bothered about h&a, and some diamonds may show an arrow pattern anyway.

If you are in the Uk, may I make a suggestion? Contact Dr Indira Marchant at www.bestdiamonds.co.uk - she is a fine lady and a true expert who is passionate about diamonds, also if you want a branded H&A she can get Cut By Infinity hearts and arrows, so see what she can find for you if you find the import duties are higher than you prefer if buying from the States.

Also some have purchased from the States, I can't remember exactly but I think you have various duties on top of VAT, I think the total comes to around 20%+ as a rough guide.

ETA - just had a look for you apparently you will pay 17.5% VAT plus 2.5% import duties.

Seems to be conflicting information around on 'steep/deep' diamonds and whether they're good or not.

Is this a nice stone?

The diamond you listed has a steep pavilion angle, the HCA can penalize a diamond for this, but having said that it is likely you can do better, using the numbers mentioned below to help you.




Here are some numbers you can use as a guide to find a well cut round diamond.


depth - 60 - 62% - although my personal preference is to allow up to 62.4%
table - 54- 57%
crown angle - 34- 35 degrees
pavilion angle - 40.6- 41 degrees
girdle - avoid extremes, look for thin to slightly thick, thin to medium etc
polish and symmetry - very good and above


note - with crown and pavilion angles at the shallower ends ( CA 34- PA 40.6) and steeper ( CA 35- PA 41) check to make sure these angles complement in that particular diamond - eyeballs, Idealscope, trusted vendor input - check as appropriate!

As the above implies, configurations depend on each other. A little give here can still work with a little take there.

With that said, here's a "Cliff's Notes" for staying near Tolkowsky/ideal angles with GIA reports (their numbers are rounded): A crown angle of 34.0, 34.5 or 35.0 is usually safe with a 40.8 pavilion angle. If pavilion angle = 40.6 lean toward a 34.5-35.0 crown. If pavilion angle = 41 lean toward a 34.0-34.5 crown.

GIA "EX" in cut is great at its heart, but it ranges a bit wider than some people prefer, particularly in deep combinations (pavilion > 41 with crown > 35).

This is not a well cut diamond. Where is there conflicting information about steep/deep diamonds?

Follow Lorelei''s guideline or you can just plug it in on the HCA.
