So we bought our diamond and are now having the diamond set. When I was discussing the setting on the phone with the jeweler, he said "I really like this stone. Its really a sweet LITTLE stone!"

I was so excited about my diamond and was thinking the 1.65 carat size was ENORMOUS prior to that comment!! haha. I know he sees seriously large stones all the time and I thnk he''s done Ashley Judd''s ring and some other celebrities rings, but now I kinda feel like my stone is a teensy chip!! Maybe its because its an Asscher and they don''t show their size very well?

Sometimes, "little" is used as a pseudonym for "cute." Also, to your point, if this guy is handling 5 and 6 carat stones, then yeah--maybe 1.65 carats is "little" to him, BUT think of this: the average ering size in the US is soemthing like.45 carats...and not many people have a beautiful fancy asscher cut to show off either! 1.65 is a VERY substantial size diamond.

ETA: I just read your stone thread--you have a GREAT diamond!

Thanks you guys. My fiance would cringe if he knew I felt my diamond was small. It hasn''t even arrived yet! I wouldn''t expect shrinkage to begin until I had at least had the diamond on my finger for a while!! Guess I''m just sensitive about things when an "expert" says things, you know?

Thanks

1.65 is not little, I would would be THRILLED. ANd I have been following your story and you have icked out s lovely asscher. Perhaps he meant all diamonds are small....I mean hey even PH''s ring is small the a box of Tic Tacs. I wouldnt worry about it, let shrinkage wait until you actually have to ring on your hand.

A jewelry store owner did the same exact thing to me, calling my 1.5 ct pear a "nice little stone" and I swear, I almost walked out. Note that this was a woman, so it''s not like she''s got gigantic hands and the stone looks small compared to them. I know she deals with bigger diamonds every day, but 1.5 ct is NOT small!!! Sometimes with people I think it can be a mental game. This is the woman whose store made my custom mount, and during the process of waxes and mounts and stuff, this same woman said, "it''s not a trivial thing setting this stone - it''s a big stone." So that, from the same person. I don''t bother to listen to any of those comments anymore!!

Maybe your setter is a man with big ole hands and he didn''t mean it disparagingly.

PGT I wouldn''t think too much of it, maybe the jeweler just wasn''t thinking about what he/she was saying. For instance one of my co-workers just bought a truck and wanted us to all go out during lunch so basically she could show off. Well the truck she bought was a Ford Expedition but the first thing out of my mouth was "that''s a nice little truck"...

Now anyone who was seen an Expedition knows there is nothing little about it but when I said it I wasn''t thinking of my use of the term "little" as being literal....well needless to say I had to hear about that for hours.

1.65 is a HUGE ROCK! And an Asscher nonetheless, enjoy it in good health!

I kind of liken this story to when I was pregnant and people would come up to me and tell me all their horror stories about delivery and all the things that had happened to their friends without realizing that they were turning me into a neurotic basketcase. Sometimes people just don''t realize that what they are saying is insensitive. PERIOD. The jeweler also probably tells his wife that she''s not fat, she''s just "chubby."

Don''t worry about it at all. I second Jennifer5973''s comment. Your diamond is bigger than most out there. I would LOVE to have a 1.65 carat stone. I think my 1.25 carat stone is big, but I know that there will always be someone with a bigger, more beautiful stone, but that''s o.k. It''s mine and no one else''s.

I hope you enjoy your new diamond and ring. I didn''t know about Asscher cuts until I came here and I think they are beautiful. Look at the 1.77 ct stone in this link. It''s beautiful and probably very comparable in size to yours!

Hi there PG Tips, I''ll have 2 sugars please!!! Joking aside, from one Brit to another, please stay excited about your lovely Asscher, it is enormous to most and especially here in Blighty. If I remember from your profile the area you live in, I suppose you may see some larger stones there, but I can imagine 1 carats are scarce, let alone yours!! I think " little" can be used in many instances as said previously to " cuteify"

something or someone, but doesn''t necessarily mean that the person or thing is small. Example, round here referring to a hulking 6.3 farmer as being a " nice little old boy!" Enjoy your huge rock, wear it proudly and I''m sure you will get lots of ooohs and aaahs over it and wistful sighs. You are one lucky gal to have it. Next time you speak to your jeweller, think of "sweet little" regarding him in another context, if you get my meaning

Sure that will make you feel better!!
