I found this article on digg today. I was rather surprised by it since we all know that gems are not a traditional or even a good investment in a lot of ways. The author is taking some heat from the comments left!

That's like the stupidest article ever. Thanks for posting. I got a total laugh.

For what it's worth, I bought my anniversary ring not as an investment, but as a current treasure and future heirloom. If the future grandkids or further make some "profit" because I took the time to purchase a beautiful, well cut stone and one of a kind Leon setting, all the power to them. I'll be dead and won't care. In this lifetime, I paid a whole lot more than I could turn around and sell the ring for... so the concept of investment doesn't factor in at all.

PS, don't you love how he suggests bypassing the retailers and buying "direct form the wholesalers"? A whole lot of "there's a guy I know who has access to some guy in India" are a whole lot happier today.

While it's really hard to compare some royal piece with a historical provenance, like Crown Princess Victoria's wedding tiara, to most jewelry purchases, I will say this. There are some gems I have purchased in the past that I could never buy now for what I paid for them back then. How much someone would pay me for them, that's a different story altogether. I have sold some gems that I have had very little loss on, so at least they did maintain their value for the most part.

The sad thing is that some people will read this article and believe it.

To be honest though, they are probably also the same people that dont believe "share prices can go down as well as up"

Just one other comment about this article....

I lived in Germany for 4 years (2000-2004) and never once did I see a vending machine that dispensed gold bars.
