Hi all. My husband and I want to buy our god daughter diamond studs to get her ears pierced with. She has to have surgical steel, but we don''t know where to look. Can anybody help us?

Is she getting her ears pierced for the first time? If so I would wait until six weeks after the piercing and buy a nice set of gold or platinum earrings.

I''d start by checking with the piercing place to see if you can bring your own studs for the piercing. I doubt you''d be able to, since they''re making a hole in your head they have fairly strict standards on where the studs come from and how clean they are. Unless they have an autoclave on site to disinfect the studs they''d be fairly dirty by the time they got to your god daughter''s ears.

Generally you have ears pierced with the surgical steel ones the jeweler sells for piercing. We got tiny, not real diamond studs for our daughter''s piercing pair. She still wears them a lot. Save the real ones with diamonds and white or yellow gold for after her ears have healed.

I got my ears pierced in February intending to switch the piercing earrings out (my 2nd holes) as quickly as possible. I got the basic white gold ball studs for piercing and after my platinum diamond studs came in, about a week and a half later, I switched out the piercing studs for the diamond studs. I didn''t have any issues with healing and since I''m allergic to anything but platinum in my ears, it worked out for the best. HTH

Thanks for your advice. We don''t want to get her gold because her mom is allergic to gold, and we don''t want to chance that she is too. I''ll try to convince my husband to wait until she''s a little older to get the real diamonds... (She''s only 6 weeks old!!) We''ll keep searching.

Why would you pierce a child's ears at 6 weeks?

I would worry about them catching their earrings on clothes during childhood, to say nothing of the pain and the danger a possible infection could be to such a small baby.

I'd save the diamonds for a 16th or 18th birthday when she'd really appreciate them and have a better chance of not losing them and then feeling bad about it.

Gosh, I gave our older daughter real diamonds at age 18. I wouldn''t even consider it for a baby. And I agree with Pandora, 6 weeks is scary!

I would wait until the child is old enough to decide for himself/herself whether he/she wants pierced ears. As a baby the decision is final and also dangerous. I think tween or early teen years are a good time to get pierced ears. They are old enough to practice responsible ear care and old enough to decide whether it is something they want.

6 weeks is very young not only for pierced ears but for diamonds. They''d be quite expensive and there''s a good chance that she''d lose them along the way. Not only on clothes but also in daycare, babysitters, other children pulling on them.

Metal allergies are usually caused by exposing freshly pierced ears to any other than surgical steel. People are not allergic to gold but other metals like nickel and copper used in the alloy. These metals can leach out into the bloodstream and cause an allergic reaction. Most people are fine if they follow guidelines for ear piercing. I have highly sensitive ears and cannot wear gold or silver. I have been told that platinum and palladium would not pose a problem but I have not tried these options yet. So I guess I am trying to say that the little girl maybe will not have the same metal allergies as her mother. I agree with the others about diamonds for a six week old baby is a little much. I have also heard that piercing ears early can cause an allergy because the immune system isn''t ready yet. Not sure is any of this is true.........
