I just saw a friends diamond that has a little "chip" the size of a pin on the table of her diamond (inherited).. It''s not visable with the naked eye.. she never noticed it before, but I found it when looking through the loop (she asked me to) and I could feel it when I ran my nail over it. It is VERY VERY tiny. Should she stop wearing the ring? It looks like the inclusion (which looks like a grain of pepper) may have broke the surface. The diamond is otherwise beautiful. It''s in her engagement ring which she wears daily. Any advice?

I believe (but have no evidnece) that fracture fillling works to on such stones.

Although the gletz has probably been there for ever - and there is no reason to think that anything bad will happen tomorrow.

I have often said that there seems to be lots of people say such diamonds willl break - but no evidence this is true

I would suggest her showing it to a diamond cutter. There is a possibility it can be polished out.

From your description ( if accurate), it sounds like it is a negative cavity, where there previous was a diamond crystal the fell out.

It needs high magnification examination if it is very very tiny, so the characteristics of it can be identified as to what it is/was by a gemoligist, however many cutters could possibly identify it.


Where are you located? That would help in suggesting someone local if you wish.

If it is inherited so return is not an issue, and if its a pretty stone and she loves the stone AND since you can''t see it with the naked eye, why is it an issue? It was probably there when the original owner wore it as well. Why not just wear the ring and enjoy it and don''t worry about it since you can''t see it without a loupe? If she is worried, maybe show it to someone to make sure it does not make the stone less durable and then just enjoy it!

Going to take it to the pricescope listed appraiser near Chicago, as it currently has...gasp... no APPRAISAL/CERTIFICATION. Hope to get up close pictures and I will let you all know what they say.
