@missy

I think we have discussed this before, but I am looking for some good eyesight supplements (brands preferred so I can find them). I’m nearing 50 and my eyesight to me is going down fast and I have 2 AMD genes, so I figure it’s past time to try something.

Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!

My ophthalmologist told me to take vitamin C with manganese because I have just the very beginning of cataracts and he said that this helps to slow the growth of cataracts. I do not know if cataracts will be an issue for you, but I do not see how that combination could hurt you. I believe your husband is a physician, so you could always run it by him. :))

Good luck.

Thanks, Deb. Yeah, DH knows nothing about eyes... far removed from the body parts he works on lol.

I will look up what you recommended!

Hi @whitewave so weird...I did not get notification for this and almost missed it. OK so I am using something I like but I like it because I cannot tolerate lots of ingredients and this is pretty much free of those ingredients. It is by no means the most comprehensive eye vitamin out there but this company makes a number of eye vitamins and you might find one that suits your requirements if the specific one I am taking is not sufficient. I also have a few of the AMD genes (gotta love all the knowledge we have now but too bad the definitive research is not yet in but we do the best we can right?).

From Eye Promise I am currently taking Zeaxanthin (10 mg) and Lutein (10 mg) vegetarian softgel. For my eye health as well as overall health I also take Vitamin C (1000 twice a day) and zinc supplements as well as B vitamins (to help Homocysteine (because I have another mutation which does not allow me to methylate and my Hcy runs high because of that which negatively impacts eye health as well as heart health). It's complicated and one needs to tailor specific vitamins to their individual needs. Of course you want to take the minimum necessary to maintain good health because overdoing it has a negative impact.

My understanding (from lectures at conferences as well as medical journal research is this. It doesn't (generally) hurt to take ocular supplements as long as you don't overdo but it only really helpful if one already has mac degen. But it needs to be combined with diet and lifestyle health as well. We don't operate in a vacuum and it is all related.

All the evidence is not out yet and all the decades necessary of definitive studies are still being accomplished but the best we know so far is it mainly helps if one already has the active process of mac degen. Having said that I intend on continuing some form of mac supplements as long as I can tolerate it due to my genetic predisposition and my dad already has pretty severe mac degen in both eyes and is currently undergoing Lucentis injections for it. Which carries its own risks...he has developed glaucoma from the Lucentis injections but has no choice but to continue the injections for mac degen and now is undergoing Glaucoma treatment as well. Aging is really not for sissies. Ain't that the truth. :/

I was just at the opthamologist today, and I forgot to ask about supplements. I'm going to try find something similar here in Canada. Something that isn't too large hopefully. I saw a very spry 99 year old woman at the office. I was shocked when she mentioned her age.
