I have a lovely cut 4ct stone (unfortunately of glass!) cut as a brilliant, but with double the number of facets as a normal brilliant - instead of a 8-fold symmetry, a 16-fold one. Is this called a Double brilliant cut, a Super Brilliant Cut, or what?

Greetings bobalux,

Technically it would be classified as a "modified round brilliant" as it features more facets than the standard 57-58 facet standard round brilliant cut.

It's optics would depend on where those extra facets were placed on the diamond and the angles to which they were cut.

Ie. Were all the extra facets placed on the crown, pavilion, equally distributed, 60/40, 40/60, etc.?

It'd be interesting to see a model.

Regards,
Rhino

Very difficult to photograph (for me, anyway), but it is exactly a doubling of the normal brilliant cut, ie 114 faces + cullet (1+64 on the crown, 48 on the pavilion).

Sounds interesting bob and yep ... would be a "modified round brilliant".

There are what is known as "Super Ideal Cuts" we'll refer to on the forum but that designation would be reserved for diamonds cut to a certain level of precision that represents the pinnacle in diamond cutting precision coupled with some of the rarest optics. Hearts and Arrows rounds would be among them however modified rounds could also be included in the designation IF they can be demonstrated to have very precise numbers and patterning. Hope that helps.

Kind regards,
Rhino

It would be a double round brilliant cut most likely just shortened to "double cut" or just "double" in cutters terms.
single full double and triple
I don't know of anyone cutting them in diamond these days but they are around in large glass and cz stones.

super brilliant cut is or was a trademarked brand for a standard RB from one dealer for advertising use.

"super ideal cut" is mostly an internet marketing term that you will hear on PS more than anyplace else.

Am at present drawing the cut, crown & pavilion. Will post tomorrow.

As promised, I attach the sketch
Bob
