Thanks tor the great help of this forum, I am in the process of getting an upgrade on my ering, new stone, setting, and all. Now, the question is what to do with my old ering? I have the following options:

1. Sell it.
2. Keep it and wear it as an everyday ring.
3. Reset it in a gorgeous setting and use the "new" ring as my right hand finger ring.
4. Make a pendant with the stone dangling in the middle or something.

FYI, my old ering has a center stone of 1.12 ct, GIA cert, F color, VVS2 Clarity, Good Cut/Symmetry, faint florescence. I bought it eons ago, so the GIA certificate does not have the crown and pavilion angles. It sparkles well. Then again, what do I know?

If I go the route of resetting it in a gorgeous setting (e.g., 3-5 stone platinum setting with yellow gold, paved diamond halo around the multistone outline, not halo around each individual stone), will the resultant ensemble be too big on my size 6.5 finger? Furthermore, will the center stone (not ideal cut) appear mismatched if I put ACA type of stones around it? Is it worthwhile for me to have the center stone re-cut?

Any recommendations on design for options 3 and 4?

I know. Lots of questions, especially the last one. Please help.

Fancy - what about a pendant?
dragonfly411,
Yeah, pendant is great, because I need not worry about the cut. Any suggestions?

I saw a square version that I adore very much. Wonder if I can have the RB stone mounted on a square halo? I prefer the square shape look in this pendant. What do you think?

Maybe send it to Brian Gavin to get it recut to better proportions.

After seeing it come to life I'll bet you'll get an idea of how to best enjoy it.

Thanks for the great idea about contacting Brian. The only problem is that I do not know what to do with the recut stone. Its size is the problem. It is not large enough (like 2 plus carats) to convert into a gorgeous ring, and is not small enough to make a graduated, five-stone ring.

It sounds to me like putting it in a pendent is the best choice for you. You could always take it out if you decide to recut it or for another project down the line.

Can''t wait to see your upgrade.

Okay you want a unique use for your old diamond?

Hold on.

I have to take a pic.

On second thought, I can send it to Brian for recut and then use it as a pendant. Do you think I need a super sparkling diamond for a pendant? My diamond as is now already sparkles a lot. I have to wait for my upgrade to make a comparison before deciding if I want my old diamond recut.

Now, let me research on the pendant style.

I promise to start a thread on the upgrade when the CAD is completed.

The name of this Beanie Baby is "Kissme".
It was given to me a special person and seemed to be the perfect place for a little surplus bling.

Kissme lives on the dashboard of my car so I can always see her when I'm driving.
As I turn a corner in the sunshine I'll get a sudden burst or red or green or violet.
I love the rich pure saturated colors that diamonds emit and to me it is a reminder of love.

I'm not worried about it being stolen.
I'm sure nobody in a million years would ever think someone would be crazy enough to put a real diamond in a stuffed bear's ear on a car's dashboard, especially my modest car.

I am getting into colored gems and may assemble some into a mobile that I will hang in the sunny window over my kitchen sink.
And why not?
Gems don't have to be worn as jewelry to be enjoyed.

How big is the diamond???

PS - I'm not sure I believe you!

I''d reset your original diamond into a pendant. If it sparkles nicely *and* you keep it clean (clean it before each time you wear it), then you may not need to have it recut.

MC I'd guess the diamond is about 25 to 30 points.
When I loupe it I'd guess it is approx SI1, bases on my minimal diamond education.
I do not notice body color but I can't even guess the color.
Cut is very soso when placed next to an ACA.
Setting is 14K screw back.

Kisme has lived on the dashboard of my cars for the last 5 or so years.
No problem yet.

Oh, I don't think it is really that insane.
Unusual? Yes, but that's why I get a kick out of it.

The "problem" of what to do with old diamonds after an upgrade comes up a lot here.
I encourage people to get creative when finding ways to enjoy them.

Another wonderful idea is to give them to a young loved one in your life.
They will cherish such a gift.

Thanks, MC.

I would love to have it recut, but just do not know if it is worthwhile to do so. I am afraid that the improvement might be only incremental in my case. You see, my old diamond already sparkles a bit. Although the old GIA spec says the cut is "good", the diamond itself may have above average performance. Somehow, I do not believe the old GIA rating for cut, because their basis does not take into account the pavilion and crown angles for maximum light return. I do not know anything about diamonds, but this much I have learned/digested from this forum.

Before I make my final decision about recut, I shall wait for my ACA upgrade for comparison and then contact Brian for expert advice.

Hey, yeah good point about not knowing what to do with old diamonds. . .I''ve got three other sets of studs and they just sit in my jewelry box! I''ve thought of selling them, but doubt I''d make enough to purchase the few things I''ve had my eyes on. . .

I lean towards either the pendant or a right hand ring...
What do you think you''d get more wear out of? If you don''t wear necklaces much, go with the ring, if you don''t wear any right much but your e-ring, go with the pendant

Or talk your husband into a second one and get some seriously bling-ing earrings

I'd put it in a pendant. Don't even thing I'd bother with the recut. Woobug had a stone she sent in for re-cut but it wasn't a good candidate for one, so they stuck it in a bezel setting a sorrounded it with GIANT melee and she was amazed by the result. I think it would look lovely in a halo. And if you are worried about the melee outshining it, keep the melee small or do single cuts. Or just do a lovely bezel around it with milgrain, then a gap, then another bezel with milgrain. Double milgrain bezel.

Here's what I mean by a double milgrain bezel: ETA; EXCUSE ME... but I can't count. There are THREE rows of milgrain there. I love this design.

I vote for the bezel pendant. When I upgraded last Sept I sold mine and I really wished I had kept it. Good luck with your new ring, I can''t wait to see it

If you dont already have one I vote for the pendant also!

FancyDiamond - Congratulations on your upgrade. I suggest that there is no rush to reset your old diamond ring. Get your new set and wear it for a while, and give your old set a rest. You might find it useful, as you suggest in 2. to keep it as an everyday ring. There are often times when I want to wear a smaller ring, and not my newer larger stone.

After some time, I did use my original e-ring stone in a pendant. But, again, no rush on doing this. Wait for the right time, perhaps when you are itching for a new project, or a new piece.

oneandahalfrock, gypsy, MMT, tyty333, and Flygirl,
Thanks for your great suggestions. Combining all your ideas, I have decided the follwoings:

1. Reset diamond in another ring - I am saving the project for my new five-stone ring (right hand ring - Project #3)
2. Wear old ering as an everyday ring - I shall be using my future five-stone ring as an everyday ring.
3. Make a pendant out of the losse diamond - Yes, and I shall do more. I shall incorporate the idea into my next project (#2) - a diamond necklace with a pendant.

Some rough ideas about project #2.
Will attach photos in next post after I figure out how.

Diamond necklace but with my RB diamond instead of pear diamond.

Details of diamond pendant:
diamond paved, tear-drop or pear shaped outline.
My 1.12 cw diamond with a diamond halo to make it look larger.

diamond with halo like her ring

Or like this.

The loose diamond with halo will sit inside bottom of the pear-shaped pendant.

What do you think?

Of course, I''ll wait for project #1 to complete before proceeding with project #2. In the meantime, I can keep dreaming and plotting.
