I will be purchasing two .63 ct H Si1 stones and need them mounted in yellow gold. Considering this size, what is the ideal setting so that they are not too tall (protruding from the ear) and sag very little. I like this setting, what do you guys think? Also do most people get uncerted stones ?? if so what kind of savings can be appreciated comparing to certed GIA xxx stones which are costing about 1500 a piece? Thanks

I think these settings for diamond studs would be wonderful. My personal opinion for earrings is I would get the stones as nice as I can without getting certified stones. I can''t wait to see what you get.

How can one ensure a great diamond without having a certificate ??

Well, you could get an idealscope and learn to use it, but you''d have to be pretty good at grading color and clarity, too. Because without a cert, you have no idea if what they say is true. You''d pretty much have to take the stones for an independent appraisal, and the cost of that could get expensive.

As far as stud settings go, aren''t the prongs on your ring white gold or platinum? I think prongs on diamonds should always be white metal, so I''d get studs in white gold regardless of what my other jewelry was made of.

I should add that if I were looking under a half carat per stone, I might consider uncertified if I knew how to use the idealscope and could look at the stones under the microscope. But over a half carat, I''d probably go with certified.

Hello,
I just bought my first pair of studs last month. I personally went for certified stones b/c I intend to upgrade them in the future. You should ask which ever vendor you are purchasing them from whether getting uncerted stones would affect your ability to upgrade in the future, IF upgrading is something that is important to you. As for the setting, I wanted the same thing that you mention... for the earrings not to stick out very far from my ear lobe. So, I went with the three prong martini setting. They are perfect because there is less metal, more diamond showing and they sit very flat against the earlobe. Here is a picture of them:
