Summer is practically here, and since I have time on my hands, I'm in the process of reclaiming my backyard! Pots filled with flowers, a rustic and sturdy wooden bench and table to seat eight (which in the past has been the focal point for summer meals), outdoor furniture with great comfy cushions. What's missing?! A gas grill!! I have never had one before, and only used one once but I love the ease of it - no waiting for charcoal, etc.

Can I get a good one for under $500? If I had to, I would up it to $750, but with tax, delivery and setup, it would probably come to that any way. Has anyone bought one that they just love? Has anyone researched brands for reliability and such? Are there certain ones to avoid, or can I just go into my nearest Orchard Supply Hardware store and get one?

Also, what do you love about yours and what are the "must haves?"

I would normally spend time researching them, but I have family coming in from out of town this Sunday and was (perhaps naively) hoping I could have it up and running by then...

Thanks for any thoughts, recommendations, warnings, etc. :wavey:

Weber grills are generally considered to be excellent at all price points. You can go as simple or as elaborate as you wish with them. After kicking the tires of many grills last year, I can say that not only do they get good reviews, they FEEL solid, like quality. They aren't the cheapest, but everyone I've known who has had one, replaces it (20 years later) with another Weber, it seems.

Since it's just us two, we went for one of their stripped down, smaller grills. My husband is a minimalist: "fire make hot", and so didn't feel the need for a lot of bells and whistles. This size is PLENTY for two or 4 or even 6, believe me.

Peruse their site. The one we got is the largest of that particular series...the local Lowes carried the smaller ones.

me like charcoal, fire make hot, taste good

Weber. Ditto ksinger. They are solid.

We purchased a gas grill from Vermont Castings a few years ago, and have been very pleased with it. We looked at Webers, but the Vermont grill is very solid, was on sale, and came with just the features we were looking for.

We love our Weber. We have the Genesis S310 (all stainless) - but from the year prior (2010) so I think the # is different. We've had it for just about 2 years and love it. We have the rotisserie attachment and use it a lot, it works great and we even cooked our small 7'ish lb. turkey for thanksgiving using the attachment 2 thanksgivings ago  It was delish! We love to grill and the Weber is so solid and is really built to last. We love it.

I dunno, I finally broke down and got a gas grill. I haven't before this, because I am afraid of a propane tank blowing up. I got a little camper grill, because they only use small bottles of gas (turns out you can buy these all kinds of places, like Home Depot, for about $4. Who knew?), and I figured if it blew up, only a small part of the house would go with it.

I got this thing:

See those weird flat things instead of a grate? I don't know what they're called; it's the thing you put the meat on. Those are bad! Everything sticks to those! I should have gotten something with the regular bar thingies. Whatever those are called. You know, that you put the meat on.

I finally took a rack out of the oven (is it called a rack if it's on a grill?) and I put it on top of the flat dealies, and that works fine.

So, my only (convoluted) advice is to get the regular chrome bar thingies. . . :D

You know . . . to put the meat on.

We bought this one last year after a lot of research and it's been great. There is a more expensive version ( the Genesis Line), but I didn't spring for it and I don't feel like I settled at all. It's a great grill.

I bought it on sale for Memorial Day, free delivery and had them assemble it (local hardware store is where I bought it not Sears. I support local businesses when I can). I think I paid 450 out the door. It averages 550 when it's not on sale though.

I really love Weber grills. They are worth springing for.

ETA: Nothing sticks to these grates. You just have to properly heat the grill. And they clean pretty easily.

I totally get you, iLander ;) There are lots of thingies to think about when buying a grill...

Thanks everyone. I went to Consumer Reports and researched what they thought was best. They really liked Char-broil grills, but after looking at them, I realize that there is no flame exposure to the meat, that its done with what they call "infrared heat." I think I'd rather look at Webers, so tomorrow I'm off to do that!

We have had a Holland Grill for several years and love it!!! Everything stays super juicy and moist :) It does take a little longer to cook things(well done burgers during the winter=20min) than our other gas grill and in order to cook things correctly, you only open the grill to turn the food over---"if you're lookin, you're not cookin" is their motto. We also use it for pizzas, lasagna, bacon, casseroles, veggies, fruit desserts...the list goes on and on. My FIL has a Char-broil Infa-red grill and everything we've had off of it turns out great as well and hubby is thinking when our other gas grill goes he'd like to get one too. Good luck with your decision and enjoy your backyard :)

Another Weber owner here! We're not the 'norm' though since we bought ours refurbished for a whopping $150.00 on craigslist. It's worked perfectly for the past 3 years, no complaints!

Thanks for all the responses - I'm most impressed with those of you who've figured out a way to get your grill second hand, on sale, or as iLander did, improvise with other doohickies to get what you want. I wish. Sigh. My family is converging this Sunday at my house and Must. Have. Grill.

Thanks again. I think I've decided to go with what they have at the local store - the Weber Genesis 310 - the non-stainless version (all stainless adds about $300 to the price). I'll let you know how it is - if I don't blow myself up first :o

I think you'll be happy with it. This is our second Weber and my family all have Webers as well. Never had an issue with any of them and they really last. We got our first one used-ish (it was new but at good will in the box and it just a cosmetic issue we fixed). We had that for 5 years but out grew it now our friends have it and love it too.

I think you made a good call on not getting stainless. They're much harder to keep looking clean, IMO. This is particularly true if you have the type of husband who makes a mess when cooking.

Glad this is posted, I too am looking for a new grill, hubby wants a Weber I am a tight a$$ when it comes to money so I dont want to spend that much...but it sounds like it would be worth it in the long run!

We just bought a new one last weekend! We bought a Weber Genesis EP-310. We love it. It is hefty and has a really solid feel to it. It even has a weighted lever that measures how much propane is in your tank. I love that. No more guessing. Our gas line in under our patio cover so we have propane. But the real reason we chose Weber is that all the parts are easily replaceable. We have had a few grills, and the reason we get rid of them is some important part has been broken or damaged and we can't find the right replacement part. Weber keeps
their parts easily available for many years so that won't be a problem.

If you google 'best grills' you should find a link that lists good ones in a couple price ranges. That is where I started in our price range, and then I started reading reviews and looking at grills in person. Weber people really rave about their grills, I found. Totally brand loyal.

We ended up getting ours at our local small town Ace Hardware. It was listed for 769. but they sold it to us for 699. and built it, and delivered it to our house and rolled it into our spot in the yard for free. Gotta love that. We have used it about three times and I think I will be really happy with it.

After I posted I realized you had decided to go with the Weber 310! We got the bronze one!

HI:

Did you get the Weber? I have been loyal to Broil King (produced in Canada) but my DH wanted a Weber and that is what we got. I could not be happier--I got the Red Ceramic top and I think "she" is beautiful!

cheers--Sharon

Wow, red ceramic top? That sounds really pretty. Yes, we got it and yes, we had a great day with our family! My brother (the meat guy) brought the tri-tip and we spice rubbed it. We made a big salad, had great fresh bread from the french bakery a coupla blocks away, had some wine and hors d'oeuvres and kicked back. The grill was phenomenal (full disclosure: I didn't cook on it, my brother did), but I learned how to turn it on :cheeky: The teenage cousins who were around all chilled with us so uncool  grownups and didn't run off to computers right away so it was just great. In fact, one of them, after listening to us grownups talk about parenting said "parenting sounds like a chess game." From the mouths of babes!

I come from an incredibly health oriented family, so having a "fancy" gas grill, mainly used for - heaven forbid, meat, is kinda funny. But my brother LOVES meat, and - I kid you not - got himself all worked up over what he could make on the grill ("...and on Thanksgiving, we can spit roast a turkey..." )! It made everyone laugh and made me very happy. I invited him over whenever he feels like cooking.

The grill could not have been easier to use. I think I'll buy one of those smoker baskets since I like the taste imparted by charcoal grills and see if that comes close. What do you all think of those baskets for wood chips? Does it change the flavor? I have a garden and was thinking I could throw in handfuls of rosemary and apple wood chips if it would make a difference.

The only downside is that my two male dogs (both fixed) feel that it doesn't belong and in order to make it smell right, must lift their leg on it every chance they get...I have the cover on it and sometimes I sit outside guarding it. When they come near, I spray them with the hose or yell, but I think they think its a game...

Thanks for asking!
