Help! Which metal (platinum vs white gold) is preferred for the prongs for a ring with a larger diamond (3+ carats)? I love the look of platinum and am leaning toward this metal but I want my diamond to be set using the strongest most durable metal prong possible. This ring will be worn everyday. I have read past threads on this topic but I still don''t know which metal is preferred. Does anyone know the final answer???

If the prongs are well made both should not be a problem.

WG is more likely to snap with a hard knock while Pt is more likely to bend but that depends on the alloy used and workmanship too.

Platinum for its durability.

Platinum

My opinion:
six of one 7 of the other the difference isn''t huge.
Slight edge to platinum but something that takes out a prong on one is likely to on the other also.

That said 14k x1 white gold is my favorite head material.

Thanks to all of you for replying. While I understand that there are two schools of thought, I was hoping that Plantinum would be a good choice. I really love the look and feel of Platinum! Thanks again
