Stupid Question: Near and Far

Why do diamonds look better viewed at a distance rather than up close?

I picked up my newly bought and set EC yesterday. While it is certainly gorgeous on my finger, it flashed like crazy when my jeweler was holding it. As he was unwrapping the paper, I caught sight of this huge rainbow flash and I was like, "woah, is that my diamond?".

It''s probably b/c your big ol noggin is blocking the light...So when you look at it from a distance and without standing over it it looks better...perhaps?
