I know that different people have different tolerances/preferences for color - my question is, when people talk about not being happy with the color in a diamond (say a G or an H, they need an E) is it because they can see the color in the diamond when it is sitting next to other diamonds/master set, or because they are able to detect it in the stone itself when it is sitting alone in a solitaire setting and no where near any other diamonds?

It''s usually because they are able to detect the yellowish tint when the diamond is in the setting.

it's all personal preference in my opinion. i really can't see enough color in my J to justify 8K for a D/E color. some would rather have a smaller diamond with peace of mind.

to answer your question, i can see a definite diffence side by side in stones, but i can't see once my diamond is alone. pretty arrows and firey light are so much more important to me. i think everyone has different reasons why they choose their diamond's color/clarity combo.

Deadlock - AGH!

Long story short - usually they can see color when the stone is in its setting, not near a master set or another stone. It does become even more apparent if next to a stone of higher color.

Aren''t they seeing it more from the side? I don''t see how you can see color in a H&A G or H face up in daylight. Lamp light doesn''t count because it can cast a yellow light on any diamond. I''ve posted those two H stones taken without a flash in my sunroom with no lights on, and all I can see is white. Can ya''ll see yellow in these?

I think some people notice a warmth particularly in the side view that they may not like, but many of us having trouble seeing much difference especially when the stone is set and all by itself. My local jewler had a J colored ideal cut diamond that I compared to my F center stone and I really could not tell them apart!

My Ering is an I colored asscher. A friend of mine has an E emerald cut...and to be totally honest, I can''t tell a difference between the two in most every light.

A well cut stone will hide color very well.

That being said, I was in a jewelery store a few months ago and for some reason in that light I could see color in it...but that is one of the only times...

I''m like the poster above that would rather have a larger, well cut stone than an super high color diamond...but that''s just me!

I''ve been considering a few different e-rings for a while now, and I just decided to go with a G VS2 instead of an E SI1 for clarity reasons. To be honest though, I notice the slight color in the G when next to the E. This is face-up too. Many people say in general that they can''t see a face-up difference--I might just be super color sensitive. Hopefully without seeing the E next to it, I will "warm up" to the G in time. It''s all about trade-offs, and I''d rather go down to a G color than, for example, go down in size for an E.

Right next to each other most people can tell. But as other''s have said cut makes a HUGE difference. I was in a store that had an E round and next to my F it looked a little yellow face up under the jeweler''s lights

. I thought it was an I. Serously strange. But I''ve seen G''s and H''s (H''s were ideal rounds) that you can''t tell face up. I could see a little from the side of H''s in comparison. It would bug me. But then... I love bezel settings so it''s a none issue.

Yep, controlling for cut (since these were both great cuts with similar HCA scores and all), I could still make out a difference. It''s pretty marginal though.
